Levels Down

Well, I have been going to my PCP for blood work since my OB doesn't think I need to check vitamin levels and etc since I had Lapband. Well, when I went on my own 8 weeks ago, I was low on B12 and Vitamin D. The OB, PCP & High Risk OB said that I need to do B12 shots twice a month during the pregnancy. The PCP & OB wanted me to take 4,000 units of Vitamin D and my high risk OB said absolutely not. She said 2,000 is all she would approve.

Well, I went in this week to get my B12 shot and repeat blood work. Well, B12 is up of course. Vitamin D is still low but that is expected. But, now my iron is low. So, my PCP is having me call my OB, my OB wants me to call high risk OB, etc. They all want to be a part of the treatment decisions but I have to call them all and then call all their nurses back and it is a THREE RING CIRCUS!

Can't they do a conference call or something rather than having you play middle man?  What a pain.  I'm glad they seem to be paying attention to it...now you just have to get them on the same page for addressing the problem.  I'm sure the baby's fine though...it's you who's losing the vits...not the baby....so only one of you to worry about right now.

I just get frustrated being the middle man. Plus, I wish my High Risk OB would just monitor the vitamin levels every six weeks because she seemed to be the one that over rules everyone :)

Ugh, craziness!  Hopefully they will get their acts together and start talking to each other instead of you having to play middle man.  I'm so thankful my OB and PCP will draw whatever blood I want. I tend to track my own and go to them with my plan, partially for their by-off, but mainly just to let them know what I'm going to do.

Andrea had posted an article about Vitamin D and pregnancy a while back, I'll see if I can find the link.  It talked about non-altered women taking up to 4000 ius of D.  Personally I'm on 10,000 ius  spread out through the day and my D is climbing nicely - different surgery though.

Good luck on the circus - Maybe wear a top hat and carry a whip?

Man Traci, thats just crazy of you having to play the middle man between 3 doctors. Seems like one would overrule the others. I had my reg OB and high risk doctor too... and then I was seeing my hemtalogist for my low B-12. I had to take info from one doctor to update the others, vice versa. It was a pain in the butt. My B-12 and iron fluctuated big time through my pregnancy and it was driving everyone crazy including myself because we couldn't regulate it and keep it there. Being pregnant just threw everything out of whack. We eventually all made a decision to stop all the extra stuff, B-12 s******tra iron, etc. and just let it play itself out. There wasn't anymore worrying on my part. My baby girl was born healthy and not a thing wrong with her. The doctors agreed that after baby was born we would tackle the problems with iron and B-12 6 weeks after baby was born and we did. Good luck to you... Like the other posts said, the baby will get it from you no matter what. As long as the baby keeps growing, you'll be fine!  :)
