So when i went to Target the other day i saw glass bottles!!!!! When my son was little plastic was the thing.

Does anyone know what the benefit is of using glass bottles vs. plastic?

I will be breastfeeding for as long as i can before i have to go back to work and then will be pumping.

Is glass better or plastic to store breast milk in?

The glass revolution has to do with not only the chemical BPA, which is in plastic, although they say that all bottles are now free of it. There are a lot of chemicals in plastic compounds, and glass is seen as a more environmentally and safer alternative. I don't think it has anything to do with ease of use, although I imagine the glass bottles never melt in the dishwasher or if they get close to the stove! I think it really just depends on your preferences. You may find some addiitonal reasons if you google it and check out some parenting sites, but I am pretty sure it is mostly out of concern for the amounts of chemicals in plastic which may be harmful. It does seem that every day they find something wrong that they hadn't realized before. Good luck with the choice.

I have think its more to do with going "Green" and less chemicals in the glass than plastic.  However, I had some glass bottles and some plastic bottles, and my preference was for the Ventaire by playtex (plastic).  Also.. my LO now throws bottles soooo glass wouldn't work now.

Thanks! Yea i thought about the throwing part. My son used to throw his bottle all the time! Maybe i'll try both... see what i like better. I was just very curious about the difference if there was any.

A lot of glass bottles have silicone sleeves you can buy to prevent breakage from throwing. They are pretty heavy duty bottles. I use the Born Free glass bottles and we've dropped them plenty of times with no ill effects!

Banded 03/22/06  276/261/184 (highest/surgery/lowest)

Sleeved 07/11/2013  228/165 (surgery/current) (111lbs lost)

I also heard that you have to be careful with glass in case when the baby is older they throw it and it might break.  I would be worried about that, but if I had glass I am pretty sure I wouldn't let the baby have it by himself.

I think the BPA free bottles are safe enough. I use the Avent BPA free but they do leak if you don't get a good seal when u close them.  & this will drive you mad if you spill your breastmilk! However, when I was pumping I was using Dr,Browns because they fit right onto the shied of the Medela pump I was using.  So in that aspect they were great but a total pain to clean! Good luck!

like the others said its has to do with this whole "green" thing... i would be more worried about when they are old enough to hold their own bottle that they would drop the bottle on their little bodies and get hurt

Although I breastfed, I certainly wanted and needed the flexibility of feeding him breast milk in a bottle, like you especially when I went back to work.  I wanted to use Dr. Brown and wanted BPA-free.  The 4 ounce bottles were less expensive than the plastic.  Dr. Browns aren't difficult to clean if you have a dishwasher.  When he was old enough to hold his own bottle and drinking more than 4 oz, we switched to the wide mouth 8 ounce plastic BPA-free Dr. Brown bottles.  The glass 8 oz were just too heavy, and the non-wide-mouth plastic bottles were too tall and tipsy.

For storing breast milk, I stored it in breast milk storage bags or poured it from the medela pumping bottles into his drinking bottles.  As far as what I researched, one was not safer than the other as long as the plastic was BPA-free.  Using glass was just more environmentally friendly.
