Bottles and dishwashers

Okay so things have definately changed since my first born of 11 years ago. I am going to breast feed my baby as long as i can and when i go back to work i am going to pump pump pump. Anyway my question is this-

11 years ago i would boil all my bottles to steralize them the first time. I heard that "now a days" people just throw them into the dishwasher and that is okay for steralization?

I am confused... We don't have a dishwasher so we are going to need to buy one soon. Just curious about this...

Thank you.

For the first time use I use the microwave sterilizer bags (just toss everything in them, add water and then nuke them the time it says), then I run them though the dishwasher. With breastmilk it can be kind of sticky and leave a bit of residue, so I always rinse them right when I am done with them and then put them in the dishwasher.

Oh, and I wanted to add that I only use glass bottles, so that might make a difference, but I don't think that it does.

Thank you. I was also wondering about glass vs. plastic. I am taking a breast feeding class in a few weeks and i am hoping this subject comes up since i am absolutley clueless. With my first baby i breast fed for only 3 months and then i tried pumping but i wasn't producing enough. This time i am more focused (and older LOL) to pump and store.

Is that a personal choice using glass vs. plastic or how did you decide that. (If you don't mind me asking).

I don't mind at all! We are a pretty "green" family, so we are slowly getting rid of everything plasitc in our home, so I figured I would just buy glass because I do not like the idea of what happens (and what can leech from plastic) when it is heated. It just seems like everytime you turn around they are saying SOMETHING in plastic is no longer healthy for us, so rather then worry about it I just went with glass from the start.

I don't buy any baby food in plastic either, and for the four plastic feeding bowls I have (for when we are on the go) I made sure to buy recycled plastic BPA free bowls from Green Toys, Inc (they are made 100% from recycled milk jugs!).

yea boiling is not advised anymore.  My ped told me to either throw them in the dishwasher or wash them well with hot soapy water for the first time.

i boiled them the first time.. now use the dishwasher... since they are no longer steralized as soon as they hit the air... its pointless in my opinion

Alot of newer dishwashers models have a "steralize" option. That's something to think about when buying one. I love it 'cause I steralize our tooth brushes weekly in between replacements.

I believe it's "Sanitize" on the dishwasher.. well at least that's what mine says.  Which is different than sterilize.

However, I haven't sterilized bottles since the first time I brought them home.  Now they just get washed in hot soapy water.
