home-made cough syrup
I keep forgetting to post this!
Over easter, when we were in IL visiting family, Rowan developed a bad cough - mainly when he was trying to sleep. There isn't much you can give a 9 month old, and my usual tricks, like hanging out in the bathroom with the shower running, nursing him, putting him in bed with us... weren't working. I got to thinking though, that the main thing that helps most cough syrups work is the SYRUP part - something to soothe and coat the throat. Well I can't give him honey or maple syrup, so my next best idea was a simply sugar syrup. My mother-in-law also had palm sugar, so I used that instead. It's organic and has a low glycemic index. I basically did about a 2 parts sugar to one par****er concentration and heated it until all the sugar melted, cooled it and used a medicine syringe to give him a little.
It seriously works like a charm! I've used it a number of time since then, and it never fails to quiet his cough. It looks a lot like molasses, very dark, and tastes like caramel.
Just in case any of you need it!
You can usually find granulated palm sugar at Whole Foods and other health food stores.
