Pregnancy after VSG

So, I'm sure you get this post on this forum ALL the time, but I'm dying for real life experience answers here :)
I had my sleeve in February and my husband and I had already planned to start trying about a year from then before I decided to have  surgery. Now I'm reading that you're supposed to wait about 18 months after surgery to try. I know 6 months isn't a big deal, but I'm 28, happily married, thinner, healthier and ready to be a mama.
Any thoughts, advice, opinions?
Thanks y'all!

Yep - WAIT. You want to be at goal or a stable weight for at least 6 months before TTC (trying to conceive). Your body went though a giant change with this surgery and you need to let everything level out before you through it into another giant change. You should also have stable lab work before TTC. I know you don't want to hear it but you are young and have plenty of time to have babies. I am only a few years older then you.

Good luck when the time comes to TTC!!

You gotta wait!  Being pregnant while losing weight rapidly can be dangerous.  You might be in ketosis and that is super bad for the baby.  When your weight loss has finished you won't have to worry about that.

I would definately wait to get pregnant. I got pregnant 9 months post op VSG and I am now 26 weeks along. It has been a really rough pregnancy on me and I have been very sick the whole time. I had reached goal weight but had only been stabilized for a couple months. I was planning on waiting at least a year but god blessed us with this baby girl, but if i could do it over again i would have waited longer.

You've been sick due to the surgery? How is it trying to meet the nutritional needs for you both? I was hoping to find a ob/gyn that has experience with VSG, but that is seeming harder to find than I thought.
Congrats on the baby and certainly hope you feel better soon!

I am not sure if the surgery has added to my sickness or if i would have been sick like this without the surgery. I had morning sickness with my first daughter but not like this. For the first 17 weeks I was sick about 3 times a day. I still have issues about 3-4 days a week with vomitting. It has been very hard for me to meet the nutritional needs. I had to add alot more carbs into my diet since I could handle those better then protein. Protein has not seemed to settle since I got pregnant. The baby is thriving but I am mostly the one suffering. She is pulling everything she needs from me but it is more wearing me down. My doctor had considered putting me on a feeding tube in order to meet nutrional goals for my sake more then the baby. I have to eat pretty much all day long in order to get in everything I need and that is hard for me. I know everyone is different and you might have no issues at all and I hope that for you! I would definately recommend waiting until you have hit your goal weight and are stabilized for a period of time. It is very hard to find an obgyn with experience dealing with VSG. I personally wish I could have found one also. The midwife in my doctors practice did do some research after my first appointment with her and also did a continuing education class on WLS and seemed willing to learn about it. However the doctor who I will be having a repeat c-section with is not as willing to learn i feel. Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks so much for sharing! That must be awful. I definitely see the need to wait and get to a stable goal weight. My impression is that you up your calories then to maintain weight anyway, so that may also help me get used to eating a bit more before I "have" to.
Hope you get to feeling better soon. When are you due?

I'm almost a year out, and we are no longer preventing pregnancy. We aren't necessarily "trying", but we aren't preventing either.

My surgeon, PCP and nut are both aware of it, and while it's not the norm, I'm maintaining "okay" for now, and 33 yrs old. My medical team is not overly worried as my labs have been stellar, I've only lost 27lbs over the last 4 months, and several of those pounds came after my gallbladder surgery in February. My bio clock is ticking like a time bomb, and due to my husband's career in the Air Force, right now is the best time for us to be trying.

I know everyone has an opinion, but there have been several VSG patients get pregnant before goal, or even within the first 18 months post-op, and didn't have issues. I'm not advocating going against the other advice here, or your surgeon's recommendation, but each case is different in my opinion.
