Not having this baby in the hospital - excited!!

Howdy!!

I am so excited!! I had my first (good experience) in the hospital, I had my second 4 1/2 months ago in the hospital ( HORRIBLE) and I've decided I'm having this one at a birth center and we're so thrilled with all the options!!

Firstly, I do mine w/o no drugs and use hypnobirthing - totally my choice I have no issues with people who prefer them. I choose not to because; 1.) I don't want those drugs in my baby's body, 2.) I want to feel every second of this miracle, not numb it 3.) I can handle it and it's empowering 4.) It doesn't hurt nearly as much as I've heard 5.) I want to do everything to ward off PPD.

Anywho... my last birth was GREAT!! The Dr wasn't allowing me any of the simple requests on my birth preferences sheet (my Dr was not on call) - example; I preferred to be without an IV if it wasn't medically necessary - he demanded they put on in ASAP. Well it was wonderful because the nurse had "other things to do" and let me, my hubby, and Doula do what we do... be calm, be excited about meeting baby, and relax - when I was getting close they paged the Dr but... oh darn if he wasn't paged too late and Quinten was delivered by the nurse exactly the way I wanted. :)

BUT... BUT... BUT... the Dr insisted on the IV when he came and pumped me with Pitocin for the 3rd stage of labor (1st time moms no worry about this - doesn't hurt as bad AT ALL with baby 1)... that crap is the devil on crack!! I had my baby - I had HG for 7 months, I passed 11 kidney stones and had one surgically removed IN ONE MONTH - I was looking forward to birthing him and enjoying him... instead I was crying in the fetal position from the pitocin!! Pitocin is the synthetic form of oxytocin - your body releases that naturally when you hold your baby and have skin to skin contact - it is released naturally as soon as baby is brought to breast... I KNOW THIS NOW!!! I asked my Dr if I could refuse it this time and he basically told me that it is now so commonly used to ensure against medical malpractice in the .8% times it's needed... and No... I couldn't. Hmph. It is used in the third phase to stop bleeding and constrict the uterus after the placenta has been delivered. Hello - women for thousands of years have had babies w/o it!!

Okay... so my point - At the Birth Center I go when I am ready - it's set up like a house and I go to a bedroom (Looks like a REAL master bedroom) a midwife and my Doula are there, my husband, and anyone else I want -- in this case my 4 year old daughter. Paige gets to cut the cord, Jason can "catch". All medical stuff is there if need be, they have Dr's on call if need be, all the newborn testing is done as it would in a hospital, but it's a relaxed, non invasive approach that is designed to let you do what your body was designed to do!! I'll get to go home as soon as 2 hours after I have the baby - I can stay up to 12. If I need to stay longer than 12 they will transfer me to a hospital. It's covered by insurance totally, they do your regular OB visits if you want, after baby comes we have the chance to slip into a bath surrounded by candles. I'm just excited to have this little surprise come on my terms. :)

Just wanted to share. :)

KIm,
I so support your decision and look forward to chooseing the same methods when our #2 comes around. It's not widely supported in our area (San Diego). In fact, I just saw this morning in the news that the ONE OBGYN who supports parents in unmedicated, vaginal births  lost his privledges at the hospital last week. So sad.
Anyway, lots of love and luck to you!

Hi Kim,

GO FOR IT!
I have had my last 3 babies at home, and this one will also be born at home.
I actually got discharged from the OB because I refused to have weekly NSTs, which they only wanted because it's their protocol if you are over 35! Hello, I just turned 35 in November, my uterus ALREADY had a baby in it, it did not EXPIRE, and I have had 6 other children! So, I refused and they discharged me. Works for me since the only reason I was seeing them is because my midwife lives 150 miles away and I knew I would need Iron Infusions, so I got what I needed from them anyway! Ha! My midwife drives up here as soon as I call her, she has never been late, and we have never had any issues delivering at home.
So, enjoy the birth, do it your way. People had babies before doctor's and hospitals all the time, lol.
I am also learning Hypno babies this time, as I have issues relaxing... I think it will allow me to be more calm during labor, to just let it happen instead of trying to control the process, like I have before.
This is our last baby and I just want a peaceful birth and a healthy baby.
Best of luck to you!

It's good you've found a place you're comfortable with - both medically and the surroundings.  Re the drugs...pitocin or anything else...they have a purpose for some births, but it seems crazy to require them for every birth.  Good for you for deciding what you can handle and what you want...and sticking to it.

Congrats and Good Luck!

My first was a c/s and my second was a hospital VBAC #3 through #7 were all born at home and all of those but one were water births.

We're planning another unassisted water birth with this one too. I had shadow OB care for a while and when tests came back normal and good we knew our UC plans were good to go. I am excited only 8 weeks left really for me.
