Hey All-

I have a few questions..9 months out from my surgery after losing 105 pounds I found out that I was pregnant.  I have been seeing the same OB that delievered my first child, and I am not happy at all. He keeps saying that everything I am feeling is the "normal for any pregnant woman."  I need some help, maybe someone on here can help me.

Everytime I go into see my dr he keeps telling me that everything is progressing normally.  He will messure my belly and tell me that "its normal he thinks but not sure with because of the surgery" He seems to think that possibly the baby isn't the right size based on the surgery but isn't sure how this should look because of the surgery.  I am taking my prenatal vitimins, and I am eating smaller amounts periodicly through out the day instead of just my three meals.

I am currently 33 weeks, and he is going to do an ultra sound when I hit 36 weeks to see how big he is, based on the fact that my daughter was almost 10 pounds 3 weeks early.  I keep having really bad pain, and a lot of pressure, I don't feel right at all, and have been in the hospital with preterm labor already.  My dr doesn't seem to be taking me to seriously when I call and so on and so forth. The more crap I get when I go in the more upset I get, I have acutally made an appointment with a new dr for next week just to see if he may know a little bit more.

Please let me know your thoughts on this....I am starting to wonder if this dr may have really screwed up my health and the babies.

Thanks!

Hi there,
I would change doctors ASAP. Even if he is right, and everything is fine (which is probably is) you will never be comfortable until you are with an OB who supports you and quiets your fears. I waited a really long time to switch- third trimester-  and it was nearly impossible  through my insurance, but I am SO glad I did! Explore your options ... your body, your baby ... you need to be comfortable! :-)

Thats what I was thinking. This dr was great during my first pregnancy but has changed practices since then and it seems  like it is more about how many people he can see and less about the care they provide when you get there.

When I was there last week he told me to make my next appointment for my normal 2 week interval, and then he made a comment about how he was pretty sure that he would see me sooner than that. I was so mad.  So I left there and found another dr who can see me the day before my next appointment just so that I can see if I am comfortable with him, and of course I am not feeling right, I have been having a lot of pressure and hurting a lot but after the way my old dr acted I don't want to call his office. I don't want to call and deal with that crap.

How much did your OB know about women who had the gastric bypass?  My current one didn't know much of anything but hasn't done any research to check on it either. I am concerned on that front as well.

Having WLS doesn't change anything other than you need a different glucose test and you need more labs drawn to check vitamin levels.  As far as everything else its all the same as a non-WLS patient.  I really don't think your dr is that off about what he's been telling you.  Because our female parts were not touched.  We don't even have to be seen by a high-risk dr.  Some ob's prefer we are seen as "special" but its not necessary.  But if you aren't satisfied with your dr then I would definitely find a new one.  There is no way I would trust my LO's life and wellbeing with a dr that I don't like or trust.

Sounds like the pressure you are feeling is just normal pressure for what stage you are at in pregnancy.  My little boy used to send shooting pains down in my whooha when I was pregnant with him just by the way he would move.  It was to the point I wanted to cry.

Good Luck!

Well that is some what good to know. Right now I am concerned that the dr has not been doing blood work to check my levels, I don't think he has done blood work in 3 months.  Everytime I ask him about how the baby's size is he cannot tell me anything, he tells me he is not sure how to measure him since I had my surgery.

I am just getting concerned how the baby is doing. I am going to see another dr next week so maybe he can ease my mind a little better than this dr.  My pregnancy this time is no where near my first pregnancy. I know that each are different but I am concerned because this one is so completely different.

The measuring issue could be:

1. If you still have weight to loose or started overweight.

2. If you have extra skin, it will not be an accurate reflection of your measurements.

I don't get measured because of a large panni and the extra skin. The doctor said it just throws everything off so why bother. So, I just have my visits and we go off ultrasounds. I see a high risk ob because of a history of losses and being 35.

If you feel you need to go to another doctor then go for peace of mind!

Thats good to know. I didn't think about that. When I got pregnant I had been at the same weight for about 2 months.  So my surgon said that I had pretty much gotten to where I was going to just from the surgery. More may come off with exercise and etc..  I do have a bit of extra skin, if you don't mind me asking how often are you dr's doing ultra sounds?  It seems as though the little guy is getting bigger, and with my history of big babies they want to make sure that he's not going to be super huge at birth but if the only way to tell is through ultra sound and I have not had one in 7 weeks, should they be doing another one sooner than at 37 weeks?

Thank you guys so much, its amazing that you have given me more ideas of how things should be going then my dr.
