baby shower question??

Hey ladies, I'm having my baby shower on May 29th. My mom has helped the whole way through and we have decided on everything together because we are both paying for things. She decided she wants to have a seating arrangement. I, on the other hand don't want to tell people where to sit. I'd rather they just come and choose where and who they would like to sit with. I feel like it's so much more of a hassle to have to coordinate the tabels and who i am going to sit together. It was a big argument last night. Because on top of that it will be even more money if we do it that way. We have already spent about 5,000 dollars!!!! I mean everything looks beautiful but I don't think we need to do that. Any advice... I want to make my mom happy to because it is her first grandchild, but I don't know :/

Awww.. I am so sorry to hear the stress this is causing you. I think at this point you and mom need to sit down and talk. You need to tell her your concerns and see how you guys can come to a compromise. I know about the "psycho grandma syndrome". My mom is a card carrying member (this is her first and I am her first) I know everythign will work out fine for you, just stick to your guns!

Wait wait wait... you guys have spent five grand on your shower?? How? I'm thinking custom invites, fresh floral arrangements, decorator, catering, a cake to rival a fancy wedding, a high dollar venue, etc. and I still can't get it to add up to $5K. I'm not trying to sound mean or condescending, because sure I'd love to have that kind of money, but I just can't figure out how a shower can total up to that much.

As for the seating.... having an arrangement is formal even for a wedding. IMO arranged seating at a baby shower is a little too ostentatious.

yep. My mom is over the top. SHe likes nice things, what can i say. lol. We are having it at jungle island in miami beach. It is a catered buffet along with a dessert buffet and customized cupcake tower in alternating colors, we do have fresh floral arrangements, plus the favors and ivitations, even customized postage stamps!! oh and not adding the photography into it YET. taht's how it has gotten up tp 5k. Well, that's exactly what I thought when she said arranged seating. I thought 'wedding'. It's too fancy for a shower.. This is a casual event. But I don't knwo how to win this one!!! ah.

Wow. That's awesome. I don't know your mom but considering everything I've read, I'd guess she's inviting all of her socialite friends, right? And lord knows those types loooove to gossip. Maybe if you tell your mom she'll be the gossip of her entire social group, she'll drop it lol. Maybe.

If she's been to a shower that had a seating arrangement then maybe you should let her win this one. I don't like seating charts for any sort of event and the only thing they're good for is keeping conflicting guests apart at weddings where there's a good bit of free booze-- if you ask me.

LOL!! i was cracking up reading your response because the booze is another issue I have with my mom and sister!!! They want to order extra gallons of mimosas for the ****tail bar thing or whatever the hell it is. My sister likes to drink, not in a get wasted way but its just one after the other and I'll be embarassed. :/ but anyway .. I'm going to see how i can talk her out of it. I don't like seating charts either that why i want to avoid it lol.

Let it go.  Let her have her seating chart, let her pay for it.  Done.

Let mom have her way, let her pay for it, and don't stress over it. I know it's hard, but it will make her SOO happy, and because she is throwing the shower, it sort of is her call. Just enjoy it all and I want to see pics! Have fun!
