Anaya's birth story and pictures!!!
So I got to L&D at 1030 pm Monday as scheduled for my induction. I got to my room and they check my medical background and began to monitor baby girl. About 3 am Tuesday the doctor comes in and checks me and asks if Ive been having contractions..."to my knowledge no"....according to my cervix I was. I was 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced -3 station. She sticks a cervadil in to soften my cervix and sends me to bed. I was hooked up to the fetal monitor, the contraction monitor, blood pressure cuff, and an IV..ummm I don't think so woman; so I was up most of the night. Fast forward the 12 hrs the cervadil needs to be in. 3 pm I am checked and am only then barely 3 cms dilated, 80% effaced and -3 station. So they give me time to shower and grab a bite to eat. 5 pm Tuesday evening she sticks another cervadil in. 12 hours later or roughly 515 am Wednesday morning my doctor checks me again...3.5 cm dilated 90% effaced still -3 station. Good enough. I take another shower and eat some more. 1030 am dr comes back and the fun begins.
They start pitocin...2ml an hour. Comes back and checks on me at 11...I'm feeling no contractions and monitor is tracing none so they up it to 4ml an hour. Comes back again to check at 1130 and still nada so up again to 6ml an hour. Mild contractions being felt but none being monitored at 12 so they up it to 8ml an hour...mind you standard amount for most women I was told is about 4ml an hour. 1230 my contractions are getting pretty strong but I can tough it out but the monitor still isn't picking anything up. So dr checks me and I am 4cm dilated, she strips my membranes and then decides to just break my water. She leaves me and by 1 am I am screaming like mad and facing unbearable contractions...but monitor is still reading nada so dr gets curious and sticks an internal monitor in me. It automatically begins tracing my contractions and they are as strong as the monitors will allow and on top of each other at barely a min or two apart. Dr quickly turns off the pit before I go crazy and also sends a nurse running to get me an epidural because I could not take anymore and honestly with contractions like that they didn't expect me to. The anesthesiologist (sp) finally gets to me about 215...an hour and a half of horrible pain later...and after 30 minutes of trying my spinal block and epidural kick in (this is about 245). About 305ish baby girls heart rate starts to dip so the nurses and drs rush in and one of the nurses looks at me and says hhmmm do you feel any pressure in your butt and I say a lil...her and the dr whisper something to each other and dr checks me. Well the explanation for her heart rate dips are found....I am fully dilated and effaced and ready to push. They put an oxygen mask on me and prep the room while I start to push. 3 pushes later with the assistance of the vacuum and a lovely 2nd degree tear and Anaya makes her appearance with a very strong pair of lungs. Dr was shocked at the fact that I went from barely a 4 cm dilated to full in roughly 3 hrs...and thought sooner as they were telling me not to push when I was getting the epi but no one thought anything of it as it was so soon after just being checked.
Anaya Faith Caldwell was 4lbs 10.8oz and 17 in long. Was sent to the NICU so they could evaluate her since she had decels and to check her VSDs (holes in her heart). She turns out fine, one of the healthiest baby in the NICU, and the holes are so small they had a hard time finding them and had to repeat the test to make sure. As for Down Syndrome...right now she has a clean bill of health based on appearance alone (no signs) but they still sent out her blood for confirmation. Fingers crossed it still comes back clean but I am soooo in love with her that I wont care what the results are (but prayers are still good :) And here are pictures for viewing pleasures.
