I hate to ask questions that have probably already been asked, but I don't think I've seen this one... at least not in a long time.
I've been reading about how you're not supposed to really "diet" when you're nursing. If you cut your calories too low, you end up dragging yourself down because your milk will suck up everything you have and leave your body to rot... or something like that.
But as a post-op, it's sort of my life mission to reach my goal, ya know? I know weight will come off on its own, but I want to be aggressive!
How can I be aggressive about losing weight while avoiding eating too little? I can't find a good calorie # to shoot for.
I want to get a fill but it would be pretty hard to go on liquids for a day and keep my cals at something decent.
One more thing... what's the best protein choice for nursing mothers? I read that I shouldn't drink cows milk on the LLL website, and I always used milk and whey as my protein shake... and I'm pretty sure I read that whey wasn't good for babies either... so what now??

I have nursed 2 post op babies without ever giving them formula, Riley is over 2 and still nursing so I feel like I can really help you with your questions. I have always gained weight nursing both pre and post op, about a pound a month. With my last baby I decided to start dieting and exercising when he was 13 months old because he could eat and drink other food by then. I lost 75 pounds in about 8 months and never lost my milk. MOST women I know lose a ton of weight nursing, hopefully you will be one of them.
The ONE thing I recommend for a good supply is 120 oz of water/fluid a day no matter what. If you are at all dehydrated you will struggle to maintain a good supply. As far as caffeine, I drink 88 oz of brewed iced tea a day minimum and I have just started drinking coffee within the last few months and I don't see any effect on him at all.
500 calories extra is what they say for nursing. If your body maintains at 1500 then count calories and don't go over 2000. You will have the most success losing weight with exercise. After a 5 month stall, I upped mine back to 7 days a week and am losing again. 30 minutes a day is what I started at and now I walk 5 miles a day.
I don't drink protein so I can't help you there buy my breakfast is about 200 calories and 28g of protein.
3 egg whites (2 if they are big)
1 whole egg
1 slice of ham
1 slice of 2% pepperjack cheese
Salsa
I make an omelette every morning to start the day with protein and it is SO tasty. Good luck!
