Dopplers....
I just rented a doppler so we can listen to our babies heart beat. It comes Tues. Any advice on using it? Has anyone else rented one? I think this will be a fun for the kids. They have all been so excited and wanting to be involved in this pregnancy. I took my 15 year old step daughter to my ultra sound last Tues and she was in awe! It's so fun!!

Depending on what kind you got, don't be shocked if it takes you a while to find the HB this early along. I got mine around 13 weeks and sometimes it took me 20 minutes to locate the HB. Now, I usually find it within 20 seconds. I LOVE having mine though, especially after my m/c's. It give me peace of mind to hear Rory any time I want. I know you'll love it too. Tell us how it goes!

Jackie,
I rented one when I was pregnant with Hannah. I was 13 weeks when I got it. It took me a few minutes to figure out what was the heartbeat and what was the placenta noise. Luckily, I was always able to find the heartbeat. I'm sure I would have went straight to L&D if I couldn't one night. It was wonderful to have before she started kicking. I was terrified that something would happen. It was so reassuring to come home from work and be able to hear her heartbeat anytime I wanted. Once she started moving I didn't use it as much. I still kept the doppler though. There were a few time when she wasn't very active(she was probably just asleep). The doppler helped me realize that she was O.K.
I would find the heartbeat by yourself first and then bring the kids in. They may get too impatient waiting for you to find it the first time.
Oh and I just used regular lotion once I ran out of the gel they send with it.

I own a doppler. I bought it off of amazon.com. I started to use it at about 12 weeks or so, but have had a really hard time finding the heartbeat until recently. My baby seems to move around a lot! Plus, the placenta sounds are much louder than the babies heartbeat, so they sometimes overpower the heartbeat.
Now that I am 25 weeks along, I can easily distinguish the two from one another. The placenta sounds are still louder than the heartbeat, but as the baby has grown, so has the sound of his/her heartbeat!
At first it took my husband & I like 20-30 minutes to find the heartbeat, and once we did, we still weren't sure that that was "it". Now, we can find it very quickly, and it does sound just like at the doctor's office, only a little bit quieter because I think my doppler doesn't get as loud as theirs does.
The placenta sounds like a "swooshing" noise, and the heartbeat is faster than that, and does not sound like a swooshing... it is more of a "galloping horsies" noise.
Oh and sometimes you can hear movement, which is cool. Not only fetal movement, but my bowel sounds as well. It makes a loud noise on the doppler! lol
Good luck!
