New to this forum...a quick question about the GD test

Ladies:
I am a gastric bypass patient 16 months out.  I am also 28wks PG with a little boy!  I am super excited.

I failed my 1 hour glucose test by 4 points.  And the dr requested I do the 3 hour.  I tried my hardest to argue my point, but it didn't work.  I knew that I probably wouldn't make it, but I tried.  I made it 20 minutes after drinking the stuff and then it was over.  Had the major dumping syndrome, and still have issues this morning with it all.  It aint over yet.

Is there a test that your doctor did instead of this?  I have to find a solution for this dr. that doesn't *really* understand my condition.  He doesn't get it at all.  I need some documentation and support to take to him and say "here" because I feel I have to educate this person.

Any information you can give I greatly appreciate.

Thank you!
Trish

NO Don't let them make you do it! It is a test and you can tell them NO. WE dump so the test is ineffective on us anyway. There is a 2 hour post paradinal (sp?) test - what it is is a fasting blood draw - then you eat a normal breakfast and go back exactly 2 hours later and have your blood drawn again. You can also have them draw your A1C which is an average of blood sugars over the last 3 months. A third option is to do finger *****s at home before and after meals for a period of time.

IF your OB doesn't get it try suggesting these things and if that doesn't work put the OB in contact with your surgeon.

Good luck!

I was gonna say have your surgeon call your OB and have him talk to him about the GD test. Oh, and congrats on the baby boy.

I didn't take it; instead I monitor my sugars and do a food diary.  I do have to go the high risk OB because of all of it; but in the long run, it has benefited me in that I have gotten to see my baby several more ultrasounds than if I wouldn't have.  I would ask if there is something for those glucose intolerant (that's what they call me)....

I did the two hour test. I passed no problems. I would never have been bale to do the regular glucose drink. Tell the Dr. you do not have a pyloric valve, which helps to keep all the sugar from flooding at once, which is why you dump. Sounds like maybe your Dr. is not a good fit for you though. My Dr. hasn't had a lot of patients with RNY, but she listens and was very open to the test. No problems at all. Is it a practice where there is more than one or perhaps a midwife? I find that sometimes a midwife will be a little more willing to listen and work with you. She can also order the test and have the results sent to the Dr. and put in your file. Just a few thoughts. Good luck!

For future reference and future babies...RNY'ers are NOT supposed to do even the 1 hour GTT.  It's WAY too much sugar (50 grams) and the 3 hour is just plain torturous!
You can have several fasting sugars drawn over the course of a couple of weeks and also the 2 hour post parandial like the previous poster mentioned.
Being 16 months out is too soon to even attempt that amount of sugar!  I'm nearly 3 years out and I wouldn't do the 1 hour GTT if they paid me money for it!

Definitely have your surgeon or your Nut call your OB and explain why it's NOT a good idea to try this.  It will help educate your OB for any future patients who have had WLS and also educate him on what not to do with any of your future pregnancies!
BTW, you can absolutely refuse any test offered to you...it's your right as a patient.  If they give you a hard time...you can always choose a different doc to manage your care!
Take care.
