Traveling with a 9 month old (long)

Well, almost 9 months anyway!

Rowan had his first flying experience over easter! We flew from Austin to Chicago and then to Saint Louis, and then drove another hour or so to the small town where his great-grandparents live. It's a long day for anyone, but Rowan handled it like a little champ! He loved people watching in the airport, and loved showing off his new found really loud, high-pitched screech! I'm sure everyone was really worried about being on the plane with him, but once we boarded he quieted down, played with the seats and windows, and fell asleep as soon as we were airborne. Our neigbors on the plane voted him "World's Best Baby."  (Thank God for ear tubes)

While we were visiting he expanded his vocabulary to include "ma" noises and he even sometimes seems to be using "ma" and "da" appropriately - but who knows, it might be a coincidence. He's also starting to wave at people!

The trip home was in the evening, and we had some delays and didn't end up landing in Austin until after midnight. I was worried it would be hard for him to be flying and changing planes in the middle of his nighttime sleep, but he did great! Apparently all he needs to sleep like a log is a warm, lumpy bed (AKA my lap) and plenty of engine noise and vibration.

We got home at 1am and I fed him and put him to bed and he slept normally. I seriously do not know what I did to deserve such an amazing kid!

All in all, the only thing unpleasant about all the travel was all the STUFF we had to take! Well, that and he got his first post-tubes ear infection - let me tell you, your child oozing pus from his ears is icky but I'll still take that over the pain and fever that came with the infections pre-tubes.

He capped off our little vacation by pulling himself, unaided, to a standing position last night in the kitchen. I see big trouble in my future!

Here he is playing with his new Illinois ball:

Cute! Does he have red hair, or is that just the way the picture looks. I know my daughter had blond but in some shots it looks red.

What a cutie!! I will be flying when Hayvann is 7 months and I sure am nervous!! She has colic and reflux so at her 6 month check a week before we leave I am asking doc for tips. I will also have my mother who is in a wheelchair and my 11 year old. Flying from Killeen to Dallas then to Baltimore. What fun!! Staying 2 weeks. Nervous about what I can and cant take on plane with her since they have so many restrictions. I am glad he did so well for you. Send his vibes my way for baby Hayvann!!

Good luck! Hopefully she'll find the hum and vibration soothing, like Rowan did. I know the hardest parts are supposed to be takeoff and landing.
The good news is, when you have a baby you are not subject to liquid/gel restrictions, you can take whatever you need for feeding, but they'll examine it.
For convenience sake, I put all of Rowan's in-flight bottles/food/cold packs in a large ziploc so I could pull it out of the diaper bag and hand it to them easily for checking.
You can check a car seat for free and you can also check your stroller at the gate and they'll have it ready for you to take to the next flight when you change planes. Taking the car seat along was still kind of a pain (getting it to the counter, picking it up from checked luggage, installing it in another car) so if you have someone who can loan you a seat where you are going, that would make life even easier. Ditto for a pack n play/crib.

Well I am glad you had those tips cause I was worried We leave here at 845 am and do not get to Baltimore till 415 so long day. Mom has to be pushed so she has to hold my baby so this will be a trip. I am happy about the carseat thing cause I was worried about that one. My aunt has a play pen so that helps. I am trying to fit everything in one suitcase but I am taking her formula cause its 27 a can here so I dont want to go there and have to buy it. LOL I am just nervous and I hope she likes it since there will be a lot of people.
