Does anyone have any idea (I've researched the internet and called the drs office, but it's the weekend) what a normal AFP level in a pregnant woman is??

I am 17 weeks, 38 years old.......my AFP was 49.  According to the test results (they return to an online account with my hospital), normal is 0-9????  Or is that normal for a non-pregnant woman??

I will be worried all weekend because it is soooo high......

THANKS!

I was told that normal is around 40 or so- it can vary by person slightly. Therefore, 49 would not necessarily signify a problem. There are lots of reasons that it could be a little higher, but I don't know if 49 would even be considered an elevated number. I'm not sure what they mean by 0-9. Try googling alpha fetoprotein and normal and see what you find.

Depending on the unit they used to measure yours, your AFP is in the normal range. Even normal for a non-pregnant woman is under 40, so yours is well within normal range using any of the following measurements.

Women 15–22 weeks pregnant:

19–75 IU/mL

7–124 ng/mL

7–124 mcg/L
