 Hi gals!
Sorry I haven't been around more! I am currently 22 week along with a boy! His name will be Samuel Anthony. His big brother Josh is very excited!
I was watching a TLC program where a woman who had gastric bypass said she had a harder time with lower back issues BECAUSE of her surgery. I had never heard of this before, but it made me wonder, because I have already had to see a physical therapist for my lower back pain. Is it possible it's worse because of RNY? I would think, after losing 140 lbs, it would be BETTER!!

Thanks!

Thats strange!
My back is killing me already but I think its because I've gone so long without a back ache that now that I have a sore back it feels REALLY bad! Know what I mean?

i know you can have back issues at first because you are losing it at such a fast pace your body cant adjust to carrying your weight different hence why i have had back pain since surgery esp the first few weeks but i dont understand why after that long period of time and that far down why her back pain would be worse. i personally think she must have done something to her back or has had a back issue that has gotten worse and since time line was post op blaming it on the surgery but i could be wrong just how im thinking.

i personally had horrible back issues pre-op and they seemed to go away after losing over 100 lbs post op. HOWEVER the back pain has returned since being pregnant, and i am not lying when i tell you that the back pain started THE DAY AFTER i conceived and it is horrible and hasnt let up.
So i guess there might be some sort of truth to this...

Well I had some minor back issues pre-op. I lost 100 pounds and couldn't stand up or move my back hurt so badly. I got an MRI and a few other tests to find out that I have damage to my lower 6 disks (either herniated or decompressed) I have chronic degenerative disk disease. I was told that with the rapid weight loss we also loose the fat that cushions the disks in our back and joints. We also don't have the strength in the abdominal muscles to hold our backs where they should be. I see a chiropractor once a week and she helps greatly but I still have issues, especially now that I am almost 33 weeks pregnant. I asked the OB about this affecting delivery last night and she told me to call the anestesiologists office and make them aware of the issue and see if they want to meet with me.

Good luck!

Congrats on the baby boy!

It's only normal that we'll have some back issues as the weight comes off - our gait is greatly affected by the extra pounds we carry and it's healthy to consult a chiropractor or osteopath to have regular adjustments as you lose - that way not only are you keeping your back and spine healthy, but you're also sparing yourself pain and shoe wear from poor gait.

Personally, the issue I now have, after having lost 130 lbs is that I found a hard lump near my tailbone/****yx area that was somewhat bothersome at first but has literally become a "pain in the ass" now that I am pregnant! It almost feels like a sciatic nerve issue, but having had that before, I know it isn't the same..

My chiro thought it might be a calcification; the PCP suggested its always been there but that my @ss was so thick before I just never felt it... either way, it tires me, causes pain when I sit for too long or am not mindful of "how" I sit - like sitting too far back on the toilet will cause pain, for example.. Am seeing an osteopath tomorrow to see what she thinks...

Overall though I can say that I have not had back issues - in fact, I can wear high heel shoes for hours now and not feel any burning pain in my feet or back.. even preggo!

Hello - I had some back injuries prior to surgery and after losing 140 lbs I had less problems but still had some soreness and tenderness. In the first trimester it was mild but last week it was unbearable. After finding out everything was okay, I got a massage and bought a maternity belt. That relieved the pressure on my back tremendously. I've been wearing ever since. No pain again yet.
