visitors who smoke

I feel the EXACT same way you do. I do not want anyone around me or our children that smoke. With that being said, my MIL and my SIL's all smoke. I love them MORE than my non-smoking mother....(that's a LONG story). When they came over, they smoke outside......I'm allergic to cigarette smoke so they just have to. I will not have it in our house.

My MIL came right after Noah was born. She always smoked outside and when she came in, she washed her hands. She never would really smell like smoke to me so maybe the wind and outside blew it off of her. I had no problems letting her hold the baby after she washed her hands. But then again, if he hadn't been my 4th child and had been my 1st, I wasn't in the mindset with my first one to let ANYONE hold him, let alone someone who smoked, even if they DID wash their hands. I don't I ever let my first TRULY get dirty until he was over the age of 2....LOL I guess I'm saying, I've relaxed over the years about what I will or won't allow with the kids, but smoking is something that will always be done outside of our home and they will wash their hands if they want to hold the baby. I mean, they smoke outside at THEIR own homes, so I always feel comfortable going to visit them as well as them visiting us.

But, with that being said, it's your baby, your house, your rules. They either abide by them or they don't come over and hold your baby. Plain and simple. Don't back off your beliefs to spare someone's feelings about their "habit". Good luck. This is a tough one.

No I totally agree. I have a strict policy about smoke. My In -Laws smoke ( the whole famikly) and we didn't go around them much in the beginning and now we don't stay long ( the do smoke outside so it's not so bad I guess) but my Brother smokes and he came over daily after the baby was born and he would always have to shower before I would let him hold the baby. I read an article before that linked the nicotene on clothes to a higher risks of SIDS and that scared me not to mention the respitory issues it can cause. It took me too long to get this baby to let someones bad habits kill him. It's just my feelings but go with your guts it's your baby and your rules bottom line. Best of luck.
