6 1/2 months after surgery and I found out yesterday I am PREGNANT!!

Okay, so I am sure most people on this board have had the freak out reaction!  I am excited and stressed all at the same time!  I have been working so hard on my weight loss goals!  I work with a trainer twice a week and I have been going to Zumba three days a week.  I am only about 5 weeks along I think, but I am upset with myself for letting this happen!  I have been planning my wedding for October 2, 2010 and NOW I will be at least 8 months preggo so I have to rearrange everything I already booked not to mention putting my weight loss success on hold.  Don't get me wrong I am SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED about this pregnancy, just wish for better timing!

Any advice on prenatal vitamins and other suggestions to keep me healthy and on track during this time?

Congratulations!  Everything is going to turn out just fine.
I was 3 months post op when I got the shock of my life.  I have to say that I still kept losing while pregnant although I was not trying.  i had a small but very healthy baby girl and I reached my doctor's goal soon after having the baby.  You can read my blogs on my profile.

I was also very upset when I found out. I also had people telling me I wasted my time having weight loss surgery to then become pregnant. I must say that I never wasted my time having surgery because it is a tool and you will always have it to continue your weight loss journey,

All vitamins recommended by Surgeon & OB:

I took 1 prenatal & 1 centrum daily
my B12 shot monthly
1 Vitamin B complex
1 calcium twice a day
1 Vitron C (iron) daily
1 vitamin D daily.
1 folic acid daily
I also took benefiber daily to stay regular (very important)

I took all my supplements religuiously... Please make sure to take all yours daily.

All my levels were always perfect.  My surgeon worked with my OB & Perinatalogist.  I was 42 when I had my baby girl and now she is 2.

Wishing you all the best and a very healthy and uneventful pregnancy.

I know what you mean by being upset and happy at the same time! I was within 10 pounds of goal when I got pregnant. It is really weird because you are so focused on losing weight and then all of the sudden you have to GAIN and it's like, HUH?!?!?

As far as prenatals go, I would leave that up to your OB. Everyone's prenatal plan is different. I was told by my OB that OTC prenatal vitamins DO NOT CUT IT and was given prescription vitamins with DHA supplement. Then after some bloodwork, my OB put me on additional Vitamin D. Your OB may also do vitamin testing to determine what you need.

As far as eating, I had severe morning sickness the first 3 months so I couldn't really eat. Now I am feel I am eating everything in site but not really gaining alot. Just keep an eye on your weight gain with your OB and WLS help and they can help you plan what to gain and by when. My OB says I am right on track for my weight gain plan (about 8-10 pounds so far and  I am 16 weeks)

The most important thing I think I did was make sure my OB and my WLS could talk about me medically if need be especially since my OB is not familiar with band patients. So between them I have a great team helping me out!

**One more thing....Keep exercising! I ran 3 miles a day before I got pregnant and then the nausea kept me from working out but now that has passed and I try to walk 1.5 miles 3 times a week. Nothing too strenuous but definitely helps me. I am afraid to run because I am so clumsy lately I know I will fall!

CONGRATS and remember that timing sometimes is not left up to us :) :) :)

Switch to a prenatal for the 1mg. of folic acid you need and for extra iron. Get your labs done to make sure you're not deficient in anything. Have your OB and surgeon work together to best figure out your vitamin needs. Add carbs back into your diet, at least 100g of carbs a day. You need to keep your body out of ketosis because ketosis is bad for fetal brain development. You also need to add an additional 300 calories to your diet so that you can (try) to have a healthy weight gain during your pregnancy, even though you may not gain any weight due to being so soon out from surgery.

Congrats on your pregnancy!
