Calories and macronutrients - how much should they change?

Post-op I was eating about 1200 net calories (i.e. subtracting exercise calories to get ~1200), and a proportion of macronutrients close to 40-45% protein, 25% carbs, and 3-35% fats.

Now that I am pregnant, I have heard that you're really only supposed to eat for 1.1, not 2. I have also heard that you should add 100 calories in each trimester (so, 100 in 1st, 200 in 2nd, and 300 in 3rd.) I've been aiming for closer to 1300 net calories, and have switched my proportions to 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat.

How much have you modified your diets through pregnancy?

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Here's what my OB and surgeon agreed on - I am 3 years out froM RNY
1500 - 1800 calories
100 grams of carbs
90 grams of protein

I am almost 32 weeks and I've gained 7 pounds, baby is in the 64th percentile (so right on track)

Good luck!

 Oh, good, more calories. :-)

How active are you? I probably eat about that many calories but then I burn 200-300/day with exercise (the whole net calories thing).

I will probably check in with my nutritionist anyway (or see what my OB says...still early, as you can see).

well I'm 32 weeks and feeling giant (although I've only gained 7 pounds! lol) so I am not super active. I don't do any "formal" exercise but my days at work are jam packed and I do a lot of moving around.

I force every calorie I eat. It's hard! And coming from someone that was 327 pounds and could probably do that in 1 sitting it still amazes me!

I was told not to worry about eating more until I hit my second trimester. Then for the second and third I was to add 300 calories a day. Right now, cause of morning sickness, I get down what I can.

If you're a normal weight now, a good indicator of how many calories you will need for a healthy weight gain is to take your weight and multiply times 12 (or you can do the old add 300 calories to what you're already eating, but the other way is healthier because it goes by your weight). So a 150 pound woman needs about 1,800 calories for a healthy 25-30 pound gain. Now I am about 200 pounds (I'm also 6 foot tall with about 30-40 pounds of extra skin) and I do NOT get in 2,400 calories a day. My OB told me to shoot for 1,800 calories but I don't even get that. I TRY.....REALLY REALLY hard, but it just doesn't happen. I even try higher calorie things to try and get that in, but I'm lucky to get in 1,500 on a GOOD day. Yes I've had a net 'gain' of -9 pounds for this pregnancy and I'm NOT happy about that, but my baby is growing well so she's taking what she needs.

My OB told me to get in about 65-70mg of protein and 120g of carbs. In upping my carbs though, my protein got neglected so I had to fix that and now I get about 100g of carbs, or try to. Some days I get more than 120 but when I do that, my protein suffers because I can't eat much. I just make sure I get in all my vitamins for the day because I know that some days, it's all that saves my diet.

Good luck to you!
