Update and Question

Clinic appt. today and Jakob looks good measuring 31 weeks, fetal assessment was today too. His heartbeat sounded strong to me. Another sonogram today and he's just a moving around in there. My BP was a little high so they told me to watch it. They told me for the first time today that they were going to induce me prior to 40 weeks because of my diabetes. I didn't realize that it had to be done. They said that full term babies of diabetics have a higher chance of being stillborn. Okay, no fighting from me on that point. I'm wondering though they keep saying that each week you keep the baby it has greater chance of success, how does everything change in a week? Also, I have started seeing some clear liquid coming from my breasts not a lot just drops is this normal at 31 weeks? Thanks.

That's interesting because I'm also Type 2 Diabetic and there has been no talk of induction.  I just had an ultrasound yesterday with great results (see my post below).

I'm going to mention your post to my doctor at my next visit and see what she says about that.  I hope it's not the case because I really don't want to be induced.

Yes, I saw your post which made me want to post mine even more. I just don't want to be induced if I don't have to be but I want him to be safe so I'm trying to be cooperative with the docs suggestions for me. Maybe my history and health are more involved that they want to treat me differently. She did make me feel like it was normal procedure for diabetics. I asked why they never told me this before she said it would only have worried me and they have a mapped out program of what each visit is going to cover unless I ask a question or something they do it this way. Let me know what your OB says.

I found this article about Diabetes during pregnancy.  Seems to me like it depends on how your control has been and how the baby is functioning.  I'll still ask my OB about it in 2 weeks, though.

So glad that Jakob is doing well! I didn't realize that they had to induce if you were diabetic too but that "stillborn" word would scare me into it!

GOod luck with the BP, I hope that it stays stable for you.

I was just reading last night in my "what to expect" book that some leaking is normal. I haven't had any yet I'll be 32 weeks friday) but it is a possibility.

Thanks Liz, I thought I read that leaking was normal too, I just thought it would happen like the week before or the week of delivery. "Got Milk" no baby...

Well with diabetes the baby can get pretty big so they are wanting to induce you early to prevent the baby from getting too big to the point that it can't fit through the birth canal. That probably won't happen until you're 37 weeks, which is considered at term and not early. So, if you make it until then, then your baby will do great!

The clear liquid is just colostrum. I already have it leaking from my breasts and I just am 19 weeks. It's completely normal.

Take it easy and lay down on your left side when you can. That will lower your blood pressure. Watch your salt intake as well. Good luck and I hope everything goes well from here on out!

i heard this the other day on one of those baby being born shows on discovery health... i think they said it has something to do with the break down of the placenta... i could be totally wrong tho..

Keep in mind that planned C-sections typically occur a week before the due date and all is well with the babies not going 40 weeks.  Jakob is working on gaining weight and lung development (and a shot of a steroid, I believe, helps that before delivery if it's weeks early).  Rest assured they'ill do what is best for you AND your son.

I started to see colostrum when I was in my second trimester.  It's perfectly normal.  Your girls are just gearing up for their job ahead :-)
