Gluecose Testing

My doctor said she was looking for an alternative to the gluecose testing because I know I will literally be vomiting for hours after drinking that stuff.

She called to day to tell me to fast before my appointment and then they will have me just sip the drink and if I make it the hour then they will redraw my blood.  Isn't there another avenue????  HELP ME PLEASE!  I do not want to be sick all day long because of one drink.

My docotr just had me take my own blood sugers at home with a monitor for 1 week at 24 weeks and then 1 more week at 27 weeks.

Some people on here do a two hour test where they get blood taken, eat and go back 1 hour later to get blood retested...

Good luck, you should'nt have to drink the stuff!

There are plenty of options! sipping it just prolongs our misery!

I went in for fasting blood work, left and ate a normal breakfast and went back for another blood draw 2 hours later. This was what my surgeon and OB agreed was best.

Good luck and DON'T let them force you to drink that crap! Dumping isn't good for you or baby!

Hi there!
My OB did a similar test to Liz's. I went in at 7am and had blood drawn, ate a normal breakfast, then went back later for an additional draw. You don't have to do the drinking one ... Liz is right, it is totally your right to decline it ... there are other options! Good Luck!

See that is what I thought.  I thought there was options.  I really don't think they put much thought into looking for another route.  I purposly don't like to dump and it makes me sick to my stomach to know that my doctor wants me to go through this.

I see my surgon tomorrow for a followup so I am going to ask him too cause I don't want to do this.  I will be so embarressed to be vomiting and then I will have to have someone bring me to my appointment so I can throw up all the way home.  And to think I changed doctors because I thought they would take better care of me here.  I'm thinking of changing back lol

my bariatric doc had them do a hemoglobin A1C test and said that would show them what my blood sugar has been like recently. It came back fine and I'm glad I didn't have to do the glucola (I wouldn't have drank it anyways!!).

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!

I monitored my sugars at home for 2 weeks, fasting in the AM before eating, then 2 hours after each meal. It's way easier on our delicate systems.

The glucola glucose test is NOT accurate in RNY patients. Do not do it. You will not get accurate results even if you DO do it. The most important thing is to do a test that will give you accurate results. It's important to know for certain if you do or don't have gestational diabetes. It's important not only for you but for your baby and them forcing you to do the glucola (crap) stuff is NOT going to give them accurate results because of the way RNY patients process sugar......let alone the nice dump you'll have as a result.

My OB will not do the 2 hour post prandial test (that Liz R. described) because it only picks up gestational diabetes 80% of the time. I don't like the 20% inaccuracy rate of that test. Doesn't make me comfortable.

My OB will not do the HbA1C test either because that test is NOT accurate at all in diagnosing gestational diabetes. Yeah it will give you a general idea of what your blood sugars have been on average over several months, but will do nothing in terms of diagnosing gestational diabetes.

A better option is to (and I believe this is the option my OB is going to make me do) send you home with a blood sugar monitor and test your sugars over a certain amount of time. Not my favorite scenario out of the bunch, but probably the most accurate given the cir****tances.

Please don't allow your Dr. to make you do this test. Tell him it is NOT accurate in RNY patients. Obviously he is not informed about that, as most OB's are not. (Mine wasn't) He may not be thrilled about it, but you need an ACCURATE alternative. A positive diagnosis is too important for your health and the health of your baby to just "DO" a test that's not going to give 100% accurate results. Good luck to you!

My OB is allowing me to skip the 1 hour glocuse tolerance test. I did not have RnY, but I still get sick if I eat too much sugar in one sitting. 50 grams of straight glucose would make me ill!

My OB was actually more concerned with my taking the test, and then going into pre-term labor because of the side effects on my body! She is just gonna test my fasting blood sugar. (That means no food past midnight, then I go to the office and get my blood drawn first thing, before any food.)

I have no risk factors for gestational diabetes though, so I am sure that if I did (like family history, age, other complications, etc.) she would want me to test in other ways. I know there are other ways to test for gestational diabetes.

I urge you to tell your doctor that you are not going to take the 1 hour glucose test. You have every right to refuse.

I did a fasting level and then ate a regular meal then went back for another blood draw 1 hr later. It's called a fasting & 1 hr post prandial test. I was negative for GD with both pregnancies with this test. If I remember my fastings were in the low 70s and my 1 hr was in the low 80s...

Good luck. That drink would SERIOUSLY make me sick as I can only tolerate 10gm before I dump.
