Formula question

OK, tell me the truth: how long have you kept pre-mixed formula in the fridge?

Rowan is about 50/50 breast milk and formula. It's not uncommon that he comes home from daycare not having gotten to his last bottle at all, which is usually formula. I mix it in the morning and if it comes home with him, we'll keep it in the fridge in case he wakes in the middle of the night to eat on his dad's night to feed him (on my nights I just breastfeed him). If he doesn't wake, or if it was my night to feed him, the bottle gets dumped in the morning when it would be 24 hours old.

Do all of you always dump unused formula after 24 hours?

Everything can grow bacteria - but not everything says you have to use it within 24 hours. I'm curious as to what makes formula so different.

I'm wondering how long that stuff's good as well. I never used it with my first... we used powder after I stopped nursing... but I almost bought some because I want to have a little formula in the house for emergencies and one tall can is cheaper than a can of powder. I looked at the can and couldn't find where it said how long it lasted after you opened it. One would hope at least a few days if its refrigerated since it's probably loaded with preservatives anyways and breast or cows milk lasts longer than 24 hours when refrigerated, but I'm just guessing. Hopefully someone will come along with a real answer.

I'm talking about the powder. I can't send just powder to daycare though, it has to be made up ahead of time.
I think the pre-made samples the hospital gave me (formula that is already liquid) has to be used even faster - the little 2 oz serving bottles I had said to discard one hour after opening.

The pre-made bottles from the hospital are discard within the hour if you don't refrigerate it.

The ones we had didn't specify whether it was in the fridge or not, it just said to discard within an hour.

I usually dump after about 1 1/2 days.  I also tend to think that most of the "discard after" timelines are a bit harsh and a way to get money out of me sooner.. lol.    He hasn't gotten sick or gassy or anything yet.. soooo it can't be that horrible.

It would seem that if he hasn't drunk from the bottle, and it's been in the fridge the entire time, that expiring within 24 hours is a bit harsh. At any rate, I'd rather dump formula than breast milk, so I number the bottles that go to daycare in the order they should be given so he always gets the breast milk bottles first.
