Try again-- 6 wks pregnant, cramps
(Try this again. Thanks to those that have already responded.)
Hi all! I haven't been on this site for quite some time. I had lap RNY in August 2005. I lost 100 pounds, which was my goal and things have been going great for me since. I used this site before, during and after my surgery - and it was a lifesaver!! I guess life was going so good I thought I didn't need my friends here anymore.
Well, I'm back. I'm just over 6 weeks (from first day of last period) pregnant by my calculations. I am 36 years old and have never been pregnant before. I've been on birth control for as long as I can remember. I got married (first time) July 2008. I had an IUD removed Sept 2009 and now, here we are.
The last week or so, I've been having cramping off and on. The first night I noticed it was just on the lower right side, kept me up all night. The next day wasn't quite as bad, but in the same area. Since then, it's been mild, like light period cramps. Mostly in the same area, but some on the other side too. No bleeding at all. Is this normal, or should I worry?
My first appointment with my OB/GYN is March 26th. So, I figured I'd wait til then unless things get worse. For now, it's very tolerable.
Thanks for any input!!
P.S. I plan to put my name and picture back up, but for now, this is a "secret" -- just between us. I haven't told ANYONE except my husband. Don't intend to until I know things are okay.

I too had cramps along my side around the 5-6 week mark. It turned out to be nothing and they were pretty severe at times. Sometimes its just the internal changes going on that makes things uncomfortable but no real harm. I'm sure it's nothing but if you need to ease your mind thats what your OB is there for. KUP P&PT's
Most likely it is your uterus stretching. I was told...mild cramping...no bleeding ok...major cramping could be a bad sign and anytime you see bleeding call the dr.
I am 38 and pregnant with my first (I have one 6 YO adopted) and now 17 weeks pregnant and have felt some very mild cramping off and on early in my pregnancy. Your body is going thru some major changes....and will continue to go thru a LOT more. Welcome to the ride!

Glad to see there is someone really close in pregnancy dates as I am here. I'm so glad I thought to come back to OH for advice.
Is this a first pregnancy for you? Have you bee in for your first appointment yet?
I was wondering what I could take for pain (headaches or whatever), if extra strength Tylenol is okay by your doctor, surely that would be okay for me too. So far, I haven't taken anything. I'll probably just wait til the 26th and ask.
Thanks for your response.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and no cramps this time. HOWEVER, I remember having really irritating cramps my first pregnancy and being a wreck over it assuming something was wrong or I was in the process of mis-carrying. I even went in for an emergency visit with my OB because they were bothering me so bad and the ultrasound proved that all was well! She did tell me that cramping like I described is something that some woman experience and it was normal. I even had a two day period around 10 weeks pregnant (I'm guessing as it's been a while) of bright red bleeding and went in for another emergency visit expecting the worst and all showed to be normal again! I went on to deliver my baby!
Now, the next two pregnancies, I did not experience ANY of this like my first pregnancy! I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!!!

I am 22 weeks along with my first baby. I had cramping (with occosional spotting) on and off during weeks 4-8. I just figured that I was miscarrying... I made an appointment with an OB, and they got me in as soon as they could (at 6 weeks). I had an ultrasound because they were concerned about the spotting. All was well. It was brown spotting, so it was older blood. They never were able to state exactly what it was, but they figure it was either from implantation bleeding, or from a cyst on my ovary (that has since cleared up on it's own). My cramping was considered normal. They were not concerned with that.
As the weeks went on, the cramping changed to ligament cramps. Those hurt me worse than the early cramping!
Now I believe I have started some very light braxton hicks contractions, these oddly, do not hurt at all but just feel like a tightening in the middle of my lower abdomin.
I wouldn't worry or stress about your cramps... but I would keep an eye on how you feel. Take it easy too! You may still look the same on the outside, but trust me, on the inside your body is going thru some SERIOUS changes!
At your first appointment tell them that you are concerned about the cramps, and ask for an ultrasound. =) When you see that precious little heartbeat flicker on the screen, you will feel so much better!
