5 1/2 months pregnant and no OB =(
I just don't know what to do anymore... I am 5 1/2 months pregnant and i don't have an OB. Here is the back story.
When i first went in to my primary care physician to confirm pregnancy i was just shy of 5 weeks along and she gave me this big speech about how i could go ahead and go over to OB at our local hospital for my care BUT she made it sound so horrible saying that I should just stay in family practice because OB was on rotation and i most likely wouldn't be delivered by the person who was giving me my care. Anyway, being my first pregnancy and having seen this same woman for my primary care for years now i trusted that she was leading me in the right direction. Well i called in to see who was available in family medicine to oversee my OB care, they gave me two names and since i knew neither personally i just asked to be placed with the one that could see me the soonest.
1 week before I was to be seen by that Dr. I received a phone call stating that she would need to reschedule for an entire month later... i would have been a week shy of 3 months pregnant by then so i asked to be seen by anyone else who was available during the time of my originally scheduled appointment. I hadn't even met this other woman before so i felt no need to wait an additional month for her schedule to open up!
Well this is where my nightmare began. I was told that i would be seeing a NEW doctor with the practice and that her schedule was "all clear" during the time surrounding my EDD...sounds great right?! Well i show up at my appointment and one of the first things out of this woman's mouth are...well hun I'm not doing deliveries/OB care at this time, I'm new and just too busy!" WTF?!?! ugh ok i let that go...especially because she was just so nice lol
She went on to say that she would go ahead and order my first trimester blood work and since she would be the one getting the results back to make things easier on me she would go ahead and schedule my second OB appointment with her and then she would refer me to one of her colleagues to complete my care.
I go on to see her again for my results (all good) and she tells me she wants me to see Dr. Rahman for the remainder of my OB care...well that happens to be the Dr who I was initially supposed to see before she canceled our initial appointment. I leave that appointment and walk right over to the scheduler and explain to her that I am to be seen in 4 weeks by Dr. Rahman NOT DR LEE for my 3rd appointment. Well apparently she screwed up because 4 weeks later i walk in excited about finally meeting Dr Rahman and I'M NOT ON THE SCHEDULE!! wtf...but i even got the reminder call...so they check the system and find that i do have an appointment but its with Dr Lee ( the Dr who we already established CANNOT see me anymore) UGH! so i walk over there in hopes that she can at least get me an order for my Quad screening and maybe schedule my anatomy scan (I'm 4 months preggo at this point)
I walk into her office and she seems annoyed to see me, wtf?! YOUR STAFF SCREWED UP, not me!! and that is exactly what i told her...she ordered my tests and even noted the results be sent to Dr Rahman and sent me on my way to schedule an appointment with the RIGHT Dr for a month later.
Now this appointment was on Thursday the 4Th of this month and YES they did schedule me with the right Dr this time BUT as soon as I walk in I am told by Dr Rahman that shes unsure why I'm there to see her because she has recently STOPPED DOING DELIVERIES!!! omfg....i just wanted to cry!! There I sat, 5 months pregnant with NO IDEA who was going to deliver my baby. P.S. no one had my quad screen results an entire month later =(
She tells me shes going to refer me to high risk OB, she insists that due to my "previous surgeries" that it is what is best for me. At this point I'm just trying not to cry, I'm in a total fog...how the hell does HER STAFF not know she isn't doing deliveries anymore?! how did they knowingly schedule me for an OB appointment with someone who does NOT do OB?!
ugh as if that isn't enough...here i am 2 weeks later and no one from High Risk has even bothered to call me. I've called 4 times...left 3 messages for the "case manager" to please at least call me to let me know that they have received my referral. Nothing.
I'm at my wits end....I have an HMO and cant just call regular OB at this point and schedule an appointment now that my PCP has referred me to high risk OB. They insist they have to "review" my case before i can schedule an appointment there...BUT NO ONE WILL EVEN CALL ME BACK!
I just don't know what to do anymore...I don't think that having had WLS itself puts me at high risk, i have a feeling their case manager is going to determine the same thing, who knows how long that is going to take and then I'll be back at square one, no doctor.
I just had to let that out, i doubt anyone can tell me what to do, it seems all i can do now is wait for them...and well cry!
I just had to vent to someone...who better then you ladies! If u actually took the time to read this novel of a mess, thank you! I don't even know if it made any sense, but thanks

omg... i would be flipping too. I would go to your primary and ask for another ob referal. explain the situation and that you need their help to get you scheduled with an OB that takes your insurance asap. I would also call your insurance company and explain the situation. Many times insurance companies have case workers or health management people who help gide you through stuff like this. You might not need to see your primary again. just explain the situation over the phone and that you need a new referal for an ob or high risk ob because where you were sent couldnt do deliveries... it can be written general without a spesific doctors name and then ask your insurance company to direct you to an OB. Beg and plead your case to see someone as soon as possible, ask them to call you if there is a cancellation. in the meantime i suggest you get copies of all medical records and tests from your primary and both of these doctors in hand so when you do get to see someone else they have test results and stuff to look at immediatly. You have a right to copies of this information though they might be jerks and charge you for the copies.
I am so sorry you are going through this!
Most HMO's don't require a referral for OB / GYN care. I'd call the number on the back of your card and confirm. While you have them on the phone ask them to give you the names of practicing OB's in your area that are covered.
I too was sent to a high risk Dr because of my "previous surgeries" (RNY, Gallbladder and appendix).
Good luck!

Where on earth do you live that there's only one OB office that can provide you care?? Wow.
Anywhere in the metro Atlanta area, you can't swing a stick without hitting an OB office.
Prenatal care is extremely important. Call whoever you need to call every single day until they get it all worked out. Do your own research and find your own doc in network. Most insurance companies have their in network docs listed online. Start there. Read up on all of them and find an office that isn't run by idiots. Be firm and clear in your expectations.
