Possible Gallbladder Attack?

Ladies,

I started having some pressure in my abdomen area on Monday and could not stop burping/belching.  I associated it to typical gas during pregnancy.  Things let up on Tuesday.  Yesterday the pressure came back and I started to belch again (after having nothing to eat, simply drinking water).  While at the grocery store I started to feel pain on my right side, under my ribs.  It lasted for about an hour and eventually let up with just a little pain in my back on that same side.  I did some research and found those seems to be symptoms of a gallbladder attack.  Have any of you experienced this during pregnancy?  I feel fine this morning.  I have contacted my doctor to see what we should do.  I'm just waiting to hear back from him.

Can this hurt the baby?  I'm starting my 19th week today.

I'm scheduled for an ultrasound next week.  I know they do ultrasounds to detect gallbladder problems.  I'm wondering if they can do both at the same time.

Like I said, I'm waiting to hear back from my doctor.  In the meantime, I'd love to know if any of you have experienced this and what the result was (it never happened again, you had to have surgery, etc).

Thanks ladies!

The only time I ever had a gallbladder attack it was absolutely horrible pain.  Not just pressure.

I was about 5 months post WLS at the time and I seriously thought that something to do with the surgery had tore open.  I went to the ER within minutes.

I don't know if they can be more minor than that or not, but my experience wasn't.  It was intense pain that started on the right side and then wrapped around my whole torso eventually.  And it was nonstop.  It didn't come and go (like a contraction would).

Not sure how helpful this is... heh...

It's good that you are seeing your Dr. soon about this though. =)

It could be.  I never had any belching w/my attacks...just sudden onsets of severe pain...like one minute I'd be fine, the next minute practically in tears....but it was right under my ribs on the right hand side.

I'd think they could do the u/s at the same time.  Depends on the severity of it, if that's what it is, as to whether they'd do anything about it . Obviously, they like to avoid surgery on pg women when possible.

Avoid spicy/fatty (fried) foods...supposedly that can cut down on attacks.

I ahve gallbladder issues during this pregnancy, every attack feels like so much pain and pressure under my ribs and its hard to breath. I feel like throwing up also but nothing comes up....hope its not your gallbladder as they tend to get worse throughout the pregnancy and can't be removed until after the baby is born. GOOD LUCK AND FEEL BETTER

Ugh! I hope that's not what it is!

My first several gall bladder attacks were just uncomfortable. It would happen after I would eat something that was fattier or spicier then normal. After a while each attack got worse and worse to the point where my whole torso hurt and it wrapped around to my back. I was also nauseous with everything that went into my mouth.

HOpe you feel better and this was a "once and done" thing!

How is the pregnancy going otherwise?

I had my gallbladder removed before RNY; so as far as the pregnancy part I can't answer; however, as far as pain, etc.....Well at first they were very tolerable and on and off.  It was when it became an every day event of pain that I said it was time for the dr.  It was very easy to detect once I went what it was.  I will note, I don't know how true; however, when my sister had her first child, shortly after (like within a couple months) she had to have hers removed.  Dr. told her it often comes after pregnancy.  So it may very well be an attack.

I hope you feel better!  Stacey

Well it sounds like it could be..I suffered with the gallbladder issues the last 6 weeks of pregnancy and I hate to say it but it was tough. I actually lost weight b/c I wasn't able to eat even water made it hurt. B/c I was so far along they had to wait until after the baby was born to do the surgery and it was even like 3 weeks after he was born b/c they had to wait for the uterus to shrink so they could do it as a lap. Sometimes in extreme cases ( ie: a really bad gallbladder) they can do surgery while you are in the 2nd trimester. It can't hurt to ask about getting a gallbladder u/s at least you will know what you are dealing with. I hope that it was just some bad gas b/c I wouldn't wish gallbladder problems in pregnancy on my worst enemy. I hope you feel better soon and it turns out to be nothing. P&PT's.

I did not have the belching issue when my gallbladder acted up when I was 27 weeks pregnant. I had to go to l&d and they admitted me right then because even with demerol and phergan shots the pain was not letting up. The pain never went away and they were giving me the shot combo for 3 days in the hospital while surgeons and ob doc argued over removing it. Needless to say at 28 weeks one day I had an open gallbladder removal. All went well and baby Hayvann did fine a few days later
