Hi Ladies,

Im new to this post. I'm actually preop, i am scheduled to have RNY this fall. I know there is a waiting period before i can even TTC but my question is. Do you think being pregnant would have been possible or was or would have been alot harder if you wouldnt have had your surgery.

I have TTC in the past with no luck, I have pcos and we all know how that is. Just wondering will my chances really increase after WLS.

Thanks Ladies, God Luck and God Bless to you moms & moms to be.

I never ttc preop but I had been having sex for like 10 years and when in serious relationships only used the "pull & pray" method! lol! I never even had a scare! I had surgery and lost really fast and at 2.5 mo postop the condom fell off. I even took the morning after pill & still turned up pregnant. I think it has A LOT to do with my surgery and fast weight loss!

Hello & welcome... The suggestion from most surgeons is 18 months post op before getting pregnant but there are plenty of ladies on here who have had babies soon after being a post op without too much of a problem... You just have to add in some extra calories and carbs so you stay out of ketosis...

For myself, I went several years being infertile because of my weight... I was not on any BC at all for several years up to the time I had surgery in 2004 (I got pregnant 2 times and lost both babies early on i***** and 2001)... After surgery, I did the shots for a while for BC and also was on the pill... I went off the pill in the fall of  2007 and didn't get pregnant until March 2008 with my son... I think my partner had a very low sperm count though because of his weight and health issues so that's why it probably took so long...

I don't know much about PCOS but I know my fertility definitely increased after losing weight... My cycles are like clockwork now whereas before they were so erratic I never knew when to expect it.... I don't think it would have been possible for me to carry a baby to term pre-op at all because I was so unhealthy... I'm glad I had WLS and was healthy enough to deliver a baby boy!!!

I wish you the best of luck in your WLS journey and eventually TTC...

My second son took 6 years of infertility, inseminations and donor sperm. We were told we would "never conceive" without medical intervention. This baby was a "surprise" 7 months post op, so yes, I definately think that WLS definately increases your chance of pregnancy, so follow the rules and use some form of birth control until you're at least a year out.

Hello, I hope your RNY is a success and you wait the appropriate time to TTC. I will tell you that I have been married for 11 years and have had 2 miscarriages. My doctors refused to refer me to fertility specialists with my health issues (severe hypertension and diabetes) So it would definitely not have been possible for me to be where I am today and to soon hopefully be able to have my little man in my hands! Take care!

I never TTC before surgery, but I wasn't always as careful as I shou ld have been.  My periods were very irregular.   We started TTC around 20 months post op.  It took me 3 months to get pregnant with Hannah and 3 minutes to get pregnant with Noah lol.  I really believe I had healhier pregnancies after WLS than I would have pre op.
Good luck!

I agree with the other ladies - make sure you are extra careful for at least the first year post op. if you are on BC pills use condoms as well. WE don't absorb the pills well enough to use them as the only method.

That being said I was told pre-op that getting pregnant wasn't a probability. I had PCOS with IR. I was given the green light to TTC at 24 months post op, I went off the BC pills the middle of January. I was pregnant in April, unfortunately I had a blighted ovum and miscarried in June. WEll I was again given the go ahead in July and was pregnant in August - I'm now almost 31 weeks and baby is doing great!

Good luck and congrats on making one of the best decisions of your life - to have WLS!
