Another "i'm getting nervous" question

ALright, so as many of you know I have a lot of lower back issues. I am going to discuss this with my OB when I see her on the 30th but wanted to get your opinions too. I have 3 herniated and 3 decompresesed disks in the lower 7 disks of my back. There are many days that I can'tbend over to tie my shoes and getting up from sitting is difficult. While I was making one of my middle of the night potty runs last night I realized that this could really affect labor and delivery. Anyone have any experience or insight?

Thanks!

Are you planning on getting an epidural?   I wonder if your disc problems will make it harder to start one?

Oh yea! I want the drugs. lol I've had 3 rounds of "cortisone  injections for the pain and they were able to get those in without a problem - I Hope that they can do this easily too!

I agree, an epidural may be an issue, depending on where the disk issues are. Also, you are probably going to experience more "back labor pain" because of chronic back issues to begin with. Definatley discuss it with your OB. I'd hate to see you labor and end up with worse back problems in the end.

Fun! I was wondering about the back labor - my Mom had it horrible with me. I think I'll bring it up to the chiropractor when I see her tomorrow too.

My concern was more with the pushing - I've seen the contorted positions they get you in to push. Not sure I could do that on a good day, I'll have to try and get my legs up there later. lol that should be a sight in itself!

Thanks!

Definately talk to the chiropractor too! Maybe they can work things a certain way to help you get your legs into the contorted position (knees to your ***** that are required to push out a baby. Also, discuss it with your OB, cause you can labor and push in a hands/knees on all 4's position which might be easier for your back. Good luck!

My mother has 3 herniated discs and had back labor all three times.  Never had an epi though.  I have mild scoliosis and asked if that would be an issue with labor and they said as long as I could pu**** wouldn't be a problem.  As far as the epidural, she told me as long as there was no hard wear in my back I'm fine.  That being said, I know the pain my mom goes through with her back with the discs, leg numbness, pain and the whole 9.  I would bring this up to the anesthesiologist before you get an epidural!

Just a head's up on the scoliosis issue.....it can make getting an epidural harder, depending on where and how severe the curve(s) is(are)....my anesthesiologist freaked for a second both times. When I had my spinal in December, it took him 8 tries to get it placed and he had to go a little lower than normal.  This caused me to not be numb as high up and to feel the retractor in my upper abdomen the whole time they had it in there.

While I do not have any experience with the back issues you are having I was wondering if you had looked into what your short term disability is with work.  You might want to check it out because your doctor may want you to stop working a few weeks before your due date.  If you find you have good coverage your doctor may be very supportive of you stopping sooner than later.  I have been having sciatica issues and it has been horrendous.  I hope you find some pain relief soon.

We don't have short term disability though work and I don't believe that the state will cover anything that relates with pregnancy. I will check it out though.

Thanks!
