Gestational Diabetes Screening Question????
Okay, I know that I won't have to deal with this for a few more months. As of yesterday, I am 17 weeks pregnant. I asked my doctor about the Gestational Diabetes Screening testing and she is totally clueless. She wants me to ask my Surgeon if there is an alternate to the Glucola because she is not familiar with WLS patients. I know, if I were to take this, I'd more than likely get really sick because of the 50 gram sugar content. What should I do? Should I refuse that test and have several 8 hour fasting ones done instead?
BTW...this is my second child and I have never had diabetes even at my highest weight.

Good Morning,
I am new to the board and just read your post. I too am 17 weeks preggo and went to OB on Friday. I had previously spoken to the Genetics counselor and I shared with her that I am a post op gastric by pass patient and she informed me that instead of drinking the 50mg glucose I could eat 18 BRACH jellybeans and then they would draw my blood one hour after doing so. So, this is what I did for my Diabetes test and it went just fine.
Best of luck to you

My bariatric doc suggested a hemoglobin A1C test instead of the GTT test. It basically tests what your blood sugar has been like recently and they can tell if you've had major ups and downs or if it's remained steady. I had it done and was fine- thankfully you don't have to fast for this blood test. Good luck!
The GTT is NOT accurate in RNY patients because of the way we process sugar. I asked my OB about accurate alternatives. He said the 2 hour post prandial test (where you go in fasting and get a blood draw, then go eat breakfast, then get your blood drawn 2 hours after the first draw) only catches getational diabetes about 80% of the time using that test. And what he said about the A1C test is that it is NOT accurate at all for diagnosing gestational diabetes.
So, I'm 18 weeks now and I don't have to deal with the test for a a few more weeks, but I think that my Dr. will send me home with a blood sugar monitor and have me check my blood sugars for some specified amount of time.......yet to be determined.....lol I HATE *****ing my finger.....but I'll do it for the baby. And also, I want the most accurate test for diagnosing GD because I don't want to just 'do' one of the other tests just to be 'doing' it and it not be accurate and I really might have gestational diabetes. It's too important to find out for sure if you do or don't have it and with the other three tests, I don't feel I'll know with any kind of accuracy. So, I'll do the blood sugar monitoring and hopefully won't have GD.
Please share this info with your OB and ask her about giving you an accurate alternative. I know this is a test we'd just rather do without, but it's SO important for us AND the baby to have an accurate diagnosis either way. Good luck to you!
