VSG on 06/24/08 with
Hi,
I had a VSG done about 1.5 years ago and I'm recently married.  My husband and I are starting to talk about gettting pregnant and I have a fear that I will have troubles due to my surgery.  I have seen a lot of RNY Pt's on this website on pregnancy but not VSG.  Any VSG'ers that can reassure me would be great!  Thanks everyone!

Well I WISH I had had the VSG! But anyway, *sigh*..........good luck trying to conceive! You might want to think about switching your multi vitamin with a prenatal vitamin before you start trying. You'll get the benefits of the full recommended daily amount of folic acid (1 mg) and it has added iron as well. If you don't take calcium with added vitamin D, you might want to because even for a 'normal' pregnant woman, babies suck a lot of calcium out of your body so it's always good to have that back up supplement.

Good luck trying to conceive! I hope you conceive quickly.......and have fun trying!

Your fertility and/or whether you have a healthy pregnancy won't have anything to do with the WLS you had...They're two completely separate issues and bodily functions.  I know there are some VSGers out here...as well as DSers and bandsters.  There have been successful, healthy pregnancies from each group.  You just have to make sure your dr knows about your surgery and follow up your labs as appropriate for your surgery.

Good luck on TTC.  I hope to see your BFP soon!

I am a DSer -- so I have the VSG up top (well slightly larger VSG) and intestines re-routed down below -- and a very healthy and adorable 8 month old!

The key will be taking your vitamins and making sure you get enough calories.  I know some VSGers who have really really tiny stomachs....  so you may have to eat every hour.  (I had to eat at least every 2 hours, but I think that was because of the malabsorption.)

As Holly said getting pregnant and being pregnant is very much the same regardless of WLS or not....   you'll just have to be a little more conscious of your intake and vitamins.

Good Luck!

Hi Ashley,

You waited enough time post-op and you have the right WLS.  You'll have a pregnancy like someone who didn't have WLS at all.  No malabsorbtion!!!

Make sure you are on the right supplements for your body/WLS and eating good, clean, nutritious foods.  Take your folic acid!

All the Best,
Leila
