Abnormal Pap

So I am 15 weeks pregnant.......saw the OB for the first time last week. (My GYN just does GYN.)  So they did the normal stuff..........but my PAP came back abnormal.  This is the second abnormal PAP I have had in a year.  I had a colposcopy in April of 09...it came back fine.  They are going to do another colposcopy as a result of this PAP.  My question is if for some reason it shows cervical cancer this time, what is the risk to the baby?

I'm so scared.......this is a much wanted child...one I never thought I could have.

Thanks!!

I don't know what they would do in this situation. Let's just hope and pray that your colposcopy comes back fine! I'll be praying for good results and that you don't have any type of cancer at all. I'm almost afraid that if you did have it, they'd want you to start treatments as soon as possible, but I don't know this for sure. Let's just look on the positive side and hope, hope, hope and pray that you don't have it at all. I'm praying for you!

The risks would really depend on what it shows. If you've been keeping up with your paps, then the risk of you already having an invasive cervical cancer is pretty low. If you have a precancerous lesion they may be able to remove it even though you are pregnant or they may decide it is best to wait until ater you deliver. The following information is from the American Cancer Society:

Cervical cancer in pregnancy

A small number of cervical cancers are found in pregnant women. If your cancer is a very early cancer, such as stage IA, then most doctors believe that it is safe to continue the pregnancy to term. Several weeks after delivery, a hysterectomy or a cone biopsy is recommended (the cone biopsy is suggested only for substage IA1).

If the cancer is stage IB, then you and your doctor must decide whether to continue the pregnancy. If not, treatment would be radical hysterectomy and/or radiation. If you decide to continue the pregnancy, the baby should be delivered by cesarean section as soon as it is able to survive outside the womb. More advanced cancers should be treated immediately.

No clue...but I hope you and your miracle will be fine.  Start writing your questions down so you can take them with you to the dr.  You need answers for your own peace of mind.

I would not worry too much till later on. I have not had a normal pap in 4 years now. Testing every 6 months and had 3 colposcopy procedures. They kept saying we are watching for now. So its ok till you hear anything else. Mine was abnormal even at begining of pregnancy and still is after. Just still watching. Think positive. I will be thinking about you!!
