glucose test

I had my OB appointment yesterday and on my way out he mentionned that at my next appointment, in a month's time, I'll need to do the "dreaded" glucose test where you drink that awful orange swill... I'm curious to know, have any of you done it and if so, did the sugary sweetness make you sick?  I can tolerate a decent amount of sugar without dumping, but it's pretty much a crap shoot - what went down one day won't necessarily work the next.. I thought this was all kind of weird as on the one hand he said we need to do the test but that I was no longer at risk for gestational diabetes... why bother then??!!

i drank the fruit punch one.. secretly it tasted wonderful LOL.. thats probley why my pantry is stocked with crystal light fruit punch now... anyway.. i dumped a little bit... but when i was leaving and the restested my levels i was only at a 46... my sugar took a nose dive into the land down under... and i felt fine... there are other tests you can take... one is called the post-paradnal ( im sure i spelled it wrong) ... the dr will take a fasting level... the you eat a normal for you breakfast... then you go back in 2 hours and get re-tested...

Hi!  I have to take the test next time I go in as well.  You are due one day before me!

I took it with my daughter and I didn't have any problems.  I am going to take some crackers with PB with me just in case my sugar dives like Lexa's.  I generally don't have any problems with dumping but also know that my sugars can drop fast as well.

Anyone can get gestational diabetes, so I would rather take the test to be safe.  I hear that the glucose test isn't accurate for us RNY people because of how we are routed now.  But I didn't have any problems with my daughter so I don't expect any this time around either.

If you really don't want to take it you can call the office and request something else to be done.  When I went in for my first visit the NP actually asked me if I dump so then would know if I could take this test or not.

The glucose tolerance test is NOT accurate for RNY patients so there is no point in taking it. And if you are an RNY patient and DO decide to take it and "pass" it, you might not have TRULY "passed" it because the results are NOT accurate. There are alternatives so please ask your surgeon what a good, accurate alternative for you would be.

My OB told me that a 2 hour post prandial test only picks up gestational diabetes 80% of the time. And the A1C test was NOT accurate for diagnosing gestational diabetes at all.

I'm not to the point yet where I have to do it, but I'm pretty sure my OB will send me home with a blood sugar monitor and make me test my sugars for a given period time. He won't consider the other 2 alternatives that I just mentioned because of their inaccuracy.

Good luck!
