how much are you guys eating??

Pre-Pregnancy I would be eating maybe 1000 calories a day...my body does not really like food much anymore and I dont really eat much.  I also ate very little carbs, anything carb related I ate was low carb, and I limited that.

I am two years out almost and have maintained 120 pounds.  So I am 8 weeks and I want to eat, I am eating probably almost 2000 calories a day...if you think about it that is DOUBLE what I used to eat.  I am also eating carbs!

I am actually trying to not eat so much, yesterday for breakfast I had a high protein, low carb breakfast and told myself, no snacking (which I have done since I got pregnant), and I would not eat until lunch.   Well about 11a.m. rolls around and I NEEDED to eat.  I was hot, like sweating through my clothes and shaking so bad, the only thing that made it better was to eat.

So i have made sure to eat a snack between meals and try to make it a no-carb or low-carb snack, but its like my body WANTS carbs.

So how much food are you guys eating post RNY during your pregnancy???

You NEED the carbs. You need at least 100 carbs a day to keep your body out of ketosis. Ketosis is bad in pregnancy. Can cause neural tube defects.  Please don't go low carb or no-carb during your pregnancy. Your body HAS to have them.

It's good that you upped your calories. A good judge of how many calories you need is to take your weight and multiply it by 12 and that will give you how many calories you need for a healthy weight gain for you and baby during pregnancy. Now obviously if you are 300 pounds, then 3,600 calories is going to be pretty impossible, especially if you are a WLS patient. The pounds x 12 equation is more for people that are pretty close to their normal weight. For women that are MO or SMO and pregnant, they could get by on much less, say around 2,000-2,200 calories (or whatever their doctor tells them is adequate). I'm about 200 pounds and do I get in 2,400 calories a day? Heck no, I try to shoot for 1,800-2,000 and that is pretty darn near impossible but I try.

I get in about 65g of protein and about 120 carbs a day......I try to anyway. I know those extra carbs will give me the extra calories I need. And you can make your carbs complex carbs instead of simple carbs. That's better for you anyway. Eat a lot of whole grain instead of white stuff (bread, pasta, rice).

I basically eat "on demand".  While I've never snacked pre-pregnancy, if I feel hungry now, I have a snack, but I try to be smart about what I'm eating - I'll go for a protein juice, or a small apple and some cheese, a handful of cashews or almonds, that kind of stuff..

As for regular meals, I have definitely upped the carb intake as I was worried that I wasn't eating enough to sustain the pregnancy.. Right now, at 22 weeks, I feel like I am on the "SEE food diet"... I see it and want to eat it, for the most part....and I do.. except I'm still very mindful of that fullness feeling and I stop well before it hits me.

It can be unsettling to be pregnant post-WLS as our minds are still struggling with the fact that we were either SO or SMO before, have undergone this procedure to come down to a healthy weight and are now in a position where we pretty much NEED to gain some weight.. Oy vey! Just try to make smart, healthy choices and listen to your body - you'll do great!  Good luck and keep us posted.

I am not counting my calories. Maybe I should. But what I do know is that I am hungry ALL THE TIME! I try to focus my meals on protein and, when I eat snacks (which is frequently) I try to eat some fruit, granola bar, soy crisps or something like that so at least I am getting the baby something she needs. If I had to guess, I'd say I am pobably around 2000 calories a day give or take a few on any given day. My intense craving for all things chocolate sometimes puts me over the edge. I agree with the last poster that it is a wierd place for those of us who have had WLS to be in. I don't want to gain weight, but it's important that I do. So I am just trying to work through that.

I agree with all the other posters, you need to eat a good balanced diet, whi*****ludes good carbs.  I go through phases.  Yesterday, I ate all day long!  I ate from sun up to sun down.  Today, I had a breakfast sandwhich about 7:30 and snacked about 9:30 and going to eat lunch here shortly.  I am on a diabetic diet to prevent GD, so that includes six meals a day (min) with a carb & protein at each meal/snack.  Your at the very important development stage, so be sure to eat!  I know it's hard not to focus on your weight (WE ALL DO THAT ALL NINE MONTHS); but the goal is not to gain more than you should, and since you have baby growing the extra food doesn't mean you will gain more than you should.

I hope these post encourage you to think heathy diet and you have a great 9 months!  Stacey

I didn't have RNY, I do know that I just try to eat whatever I can get to go down and stay down.   I do tend to eat more carbs.  I have difficulty with protein.  What I eat just varies from day to day.  Like today, I am having difficulty keeping anything down.  Currently I am trying to eat potato chips and pretzels to calm my stomach.  Earlier nothing would stay down, including water.  I seem to feel better during the moment.  My advice is eat what you can.
