Should I get dreadlocks??

Since we got married almost 2 yrs ago my husband has been growing his hair out to get dreadlocks again. (He had them when we met.) He has been begging me to get them also because he thinks I would look "so hot" with them! What do you guys think?

I think you'll get a mixed reaction on here. I personally love dreads if the person has the right style for it. If you dress hippie-ish then I think it's appropriate. But if you dress conservatively, then I don't think it's for you, it would just look off. Also, do you work? If so, would it be appropriate for your workplace? I always wanted to try for them, but have always worked in an office. And now that I'm almost 30, I don't think I'd do it anyway just because I don't know if I think it would be age appropriate for me.

Who's the pic of in your post? If that's you, then you look great with dreads.

To me when I see someone with dreadlocks I always wonder how bad their hair smells.  That being said I've never actually met someone with dreads.  I think I heard that you can't wash your hair when you have dreads.  Is that true???? Please, tell me it isn't!

LOL!! I am sure there are some gross lazy hippie's out there that smell and don't bathe but when my husband had dreads before he actually showed me that they take a lot more maintenancethan my current hair does. He had to wash his hair every other day and when he did so he had to wa**** twice. He uses special shampoo that he buys online that has no sent. He goes thru each dread and squeezes the clean shampoo water in and then rinses. He also has to get them maintained every 2 to 4 months at a salon. They go thru each dread to ensure they are nice and tight and there are no loops & that they are still separate from each other at the roots. The maintenance keeps them looking nice. This stereotype is a big reason I am very hesitant to get dreads. I don't want people to think I am gross and smelly. I don't want people to think there are bugs and old food in my hair! Lol!!

The maintinence is the reason I don't have them, I am too lazy LOL I think you would look adorable with them, and if you feel like you have the time to care for them then GO for it!

The honest truth?  I'm hoping I won't get blasted for this...

I'm a conservative old stick in the mud when it comes to things like that.  Though I do admit that some people look good with them...rarely do I think they look good on a white person (I'm just being honest!).  It's not a matter of cleanliness...and I wasn't aware that there was that much maintenance to them...but to me they just look messy on most (not all) white people.  I've seen numerous African Americans that they look good on, though, probably because theirs holds more tightly together?  I also think corn row braids look much better on an African American than on a white person.    Bo Derek in braids didn't do a thing for me.

I do agree w/one of the previous posters though...a lot would be dependent on how you normally dress and what you do for a living.  The ones in the picture you posted look OK...but still not really MY cup of tea...but if you like it and are comfortable with it...go for it.  Don't forget...I'm older than dirt...probably almost an entire generation older than you!

BTW...once you've 'dreaded' your hair...can it be un 'dreaded'?  Or do you have to just chop them off and start growing it all over again?  I have always wondered that.  Sometimes my hair gets so tangled that I feel like I have dreadlocks!

I hope I haven't offended you (or anyone else).  That wasn't my intention...I'm just giving an honest opinion.

Oh no not offended one bit! Thank you for your opinion! Once you dread your hair you have to chop it off to get rid of the dreads. If I did dread my hair I would start growing out my hair a little bit before I cut them off so I could get extentions right away. I dont think I could live w/ really short hair!

I am a conservative person so you will get a no from me. I think one, they don't look well maintained on all the ones I have seen. To me they always look ratted and messy. Also, I feel bad about the sterotypes that come with any differnt choice out of the norm (dreds, blue hair, mohawk, blah blah blah).

I guess from a life of being judged about my weight, I don't want anything else to add to being judged about. It is not for me, but you need to do whatever you like.

I am almost 30 and they don't do a thing for me. I always thought that they looked uncomfortable (they make my head itchy just looking at them! lol)and "un-kept". Not that I do anything fancy with my hair, most of the time I live in ponytails. That being said - to each their own! If it makes you happy and you want them - go for it! I know that in my profession (I am a graphic designer for a sign company) it wouldn't fly. We have corporate clients and I work for a conservative company.

I'm not sure what her 'title' is...but my sister also a sign maker in a sign shop...does the designing and everything.  She's the 'boss lady' second only to the company owner!
