3 hr glucose Tolerance Test
my OB did a hemoglobin A1C test instead of the GTT test and it shows what your blood sugars have been like recently (ups and downs, etc). It's what my bariatric surgeon suggested instead of the GTT. As RNY patients, we can't do the GTT because it will make us dump, it's too much liquid to finish in 3-5 mins (due to our stomach size), and we lack a pyloric valve (which will make the results inaccurate anyways). I would refuse the GTT!!
I want to thank all of you for your help and advice. I talked with my GP and he said NO NO NO do not do the GTT - what will we learn if you do it? Nothing - we already know you were diabetic before WLS - so we will jus****ch your sugar everyday and do A1c's regularly. So now I am back to poking myself 4 times a day, have NOT done that in nearly 3 years...

I am almost 33 weeks pregnant, post RNY from 11/07. Since I couldn't do the GTT, my OB had me do some fasting and 2 hours PP (after I ate) checks. I did them for a few days, not every day but over a week or so. All of my checks were perfect. So my OB said I didn't have to continue poking myself, that I am fine! If your checks are good, see if you can either stop doing them or doing them randomly since you have a previous history of having high sugars with pregnancy. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice will ask doc about it - I never did have gestational diabetes with my 2 PG but that was 20 yrs ago, was diagnosed with type ll in 1999. Was pretty much diet controled until I put on loads of wheight in 2005... After WLS it went away -- All of my A1c's have been of a normal Non diabetic for the last 3 years!!!
