Hello I am new to the Pregnancy board but not new to OH, I am just 6 days shy of my 3 yr WLS anniversary.

I am 7 wks 4days Pregnant and due to diabetes prior to WLS (Gastric Bypass) - my OB has decided to have me do the 3hr GTT on Tuesday... My question is because of the high sugar content should I expect horrible dumping???

If you dump on sugars, then definitely expect it.  If you are sensitive at all to sugars, then expect to feel horrible.  Good luck with your test and congratulations on your surgiversary and your pregnancy!

I will see if I can talk to him tomorrow, I do have an appt with my GP tomorrow he will also advise me on the GTT  He is all about keeping me healthy and not doing anything to harm me or my pouch as well.

I have a feeling though because of the diabetes befor WLS I am sure they will make me do it....as they will want to keep a close eye on me for gestational diabetes.

If you had RNY then you no longer have a pyloric valve, meaning that any results they are able to get from the test are more than likely inaccurate. There are several alternatives if they are concerned about your sugars at this point. Speak with your surgeon- there's no point in you being sick when the results are nto loikely to be accurate anyway.

Just to share in hopes of making you feel better...

I had gestational diabetes pretty badly with my first pregnancy before my gastric bypass, had to give myself shots and everything. I've had two pregnancies since having the bypass and both have been diabetes free, infact, I'm ran pretty LOW on my blood sugars each time. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for the advice - I will do a search and see what I come up with - I will also put in a call to my sergeon and see what he suggests and if I do not hear back from him today  I guess I can also NOT do the test tomorrow until I get the information I need. I will also discuss it with my GP as he is very up on my care with the WLS.

Yes I sure do not want to be sick as a dog if the test is going to be inaccurate and not give us the info I need.

How did your OB's or WLS docs check for gestational diabetes then if not through the GTT?

I have the same issue as you...50 g of sugar would have made me very very miserable.  I decided to take another route my dr. offered and that was a diet which is if I have diabetes.  This has worked very good for me.  I have to check sugars now everyother day and track what I eat.  Eat at least six times a day, etc.  I would confirm there is no way to have options.  Now I will say this put me at the high risk OB just because that is who does that monitoring.  But in the long run, I have been watched more closely and I would do it the same if I had to do over.

Good luck finding a solution!  Stacey
