awesome ob appointment
So today i had my sono, and as you can tell from the previous post we are having a BOY!!! i think we are in agreement that his name will be Bradley James Wolmart. My mother in law kinda cringes at the name cause she says it reminds her of rocky horror picture show... i dunno lol.
So after the sono i met with the OB. This is a new practice for me because i decided to switch OBGYNs when i found out i was pregnant because my last ob and his partner split and the one i liked is the one who left. Anyway so today for my appointment i was plesantly suprised. I had it in my head that i needed to have a discussion with my doctor about the GTT. I wouldnt be scheduled for it until my next visit, but i figured it needed to be discussed now so that there would be time for the doctor to reasearch if need be before my next visit.
Well, first think doc says is... we were all talking about you just this morning.... Apparently because this practice has about 5 doctors, they meet 2x a month to discuss patients and reveiw files because of the chance you wound up delivering with someone other than your normal doctor. The group of doctors have been researching and speaking to colegues in other areas about how to handle my testing for diabeties. The doctor was impressed with how much i knew (thanks ladies) and said that they will definatly make a decision on how to test me and it will NOT be a GTT.
Some interesting conversation though. my doc understood that even if the test could be delivered it would probably not be accurate. He also said that from the people he has spoken to there is some debate about how gastric bypass makes diabites disapear. There seams to be some interesting studdies going on as to if it really does go away, or does the way our bodies process sugar now make it to dificult to test and diagnose. I thought that was very interesting.
Anyway... maybe some might think they are treating me like their little guinea pig, but it sure dosent feel that way. I was prepared to go in to TEACH my doctor, FORCE him to research, and FIGHT against getting the GTT. I was pleasently suprised by a doctors office that cares.

I don't know if you saw my post about this but I had the same conversation with my Dr. about the GTT. He said that an A1C test is NOT accurate for diagnosing gestational diabetes and the 2 hour post prandial test (where you come in fasting, get your blood drawn, go eat a normal breakfast and then do a redraw 2 hours after the first one) only picks up gestational diabetes in 80% of patients.
My Dr. hasn't really told me what he's going to make me do yet, but I have a feeling it will involve me getting a glucose monitor and monitoring my blood sugar at home for a given amount of time.
I'm glad your Dr. didn't just assume he knew what to do. When I told my OB that I was not willing to do the GTT (and I was going to follow that right up with the WHY), he pretty much cut me off before I finished with what I was saying and he said, "You have to do it. You don't have a choice" But then I told him I'd be happy to do an acceptable alternative but that the GTT was not accurate in gastric bypass patients. I just think he didn't like that too much.....me knowing something he didn't. I'm thinking I'm his first bypass patient.
I'm glad you got a Dr. that will listen to you!

sounded to me like my doc might do the post paridinal test as well as a week of home monitoring as an added test to double check eveything. He said they probably wouldnt use A1C because it tells history and very little about your current situation My doctor was suprised by how much i knew.... but i have to say i was definatly suprised by how much he knew lol... after reading so many peoples efforts in getting their doctors to understand.
i guess i never thought patients were discussed outside of the exam room, i know i am a special case, but none the less it is reassuring....
he did mention when i first came in they were worried because i was early out with weight loss because at 155 (at the start) i was within normal weight, and then i lost a few more pounds (went down to 150), but it all came back and now i have gained about 6 additional pounds totaling about 162 on the doctors scale with clothes and shoes lol. so i am off the radar so far with them on that :)
