Help!!!!! My OB is insisting that I take the glucose test and Im scared I wont be able to do...
my bariatric surgeon says the GTT is pointless for us RNY patients for 3 reasons:
- we can't finish the whole drink in the 3-5 minutes they want us to because of the small volume our stomachs can hold now.
-we lack a pyloric valve after RNY, which makes the results of the GTT inaccurate anyways... our body processes sugar differently.
-it will most likely make us sick and we will have the dumping syndrome, because of the high concentration of sugar in the drink (the 50 gms).
Sounds like your doctor is being a jerk and not understanding of your health issue sitation. My doctor at first was insistent upon me drinking the glucola and he told me it had 50 gms of sugar in it (when I asked). I told him it would make me sick and those other 2 reasons and he said to still do it. I didn't want to do it because I knew I'd be sick and wanted another option. I called my bariatric surgeon to see if there was any other tests I could do instead of the glucola and he said to do a hemoglobin A1C- that would give them an idea of what my blood sugar has been doing recently and if I had gestational diabetes. I went in at my next appt and told my doctor flat out that I wasn't going to do the glucola and that my OTHER doctor said to do the A1C test, so we did that.
You are paying your doctor to do his job and be considerate to your needs and medical concerns, so he needs to work with you and your situation!!! I would refuse to do it and tell him you are going to do a blood test. None of this crap about having to do a C-section either if you don't do the test! Like someone else said, just because you don't take the test means you have GD and that your baby will be big. I'd be pissed at my doc if he said that to me....
GL!

Just wanted to comment from actual experience. I wanted to be "normal" and do everything like everyone else (non gbs) for the test so for DD#1 I opted to not even mention an alternative and just go for it. So I did it, drank it in the 2-3 minutes, not even 5 minutes later and I was completely sweating from head to toe, my heart was racing out of my chest and all I saw was black fuzzy lines in my view. It took 30 -45 minutes to go away and since I never told anyone how I was feeling the lab didnt even know I almost passed out in the waiting room. So just about an hour later when they re draw the blood I could actually walk and talk again. So my advice don't do it. There is a modified version which I did the second time which was so much better for me! Good luck with whatever you decide.
Uh, I would tell your OB that you feel the need to take your heel and dig it into his groin. Or if he doesn't seem to be receptive to that idea, maybe he would prefer you taking a boot and having you firmly shove it up his ass. Either way, those are his options and you just HAVE to do it. See what he says.
Assclown dbag.
Yeah, you don't HAVE to do anything. You are having a baby, your not in prison. Tell him that he can take his "have to" and stick it where the sun don't shine. Then I would find a new OB pronto. I would not want that man delivering my child because clearly, he does not have you or your child's best interest at heart.
