Help!!!!! My OB is insisting that I take the glucose test and Im scared I wont be able to do...
Im 28 weeks pregnant and went to my OB appointment today. My OB says I have to take the glucose screening test or he will have to do a C-section. I just don't think that I can do it due to the sugar in the drink I have to drink prior to this blood test. He says that there is 50 grams of sugar in the drink and I know, from prior experience, that consuming only half of that amountt has made me dump and Im on the toilet for hours afterwards so how in the world am I going to be able to sit in a lab for an hour after drinking this drink and have my blood drawn???
Anyone who has been through this, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a Dr. who is a jerk! Passing a glucose test and having a c-section are unrelated at this point- sounds like maybe he wants extra money or something. Maybe call your surgeon and see if they would be willing to call this OB and advocate for you- My Dr. went over several alternatives with me, and was fine with me doing the two hour fasting test. The whole thing sounds a little fishy to me- Is it too late to switch OB's? I would be really honest with the OB if I were you. If he thinks you may walk, he may or may not be a little less tyrannical. Just a thought. Good luck!

Okay call me confused but what does taking the glucose test or not even have to do with a c section.
There are other options to the test because I have read women here have done them. You can do the fasting diet and there is also the option to test at home I believe more often. I am only 22 weeks so I don't know yet what my doctor has in store for me. I for one have a high tolerance in general for sugar but it is not the same all the time. I have dumped on one thing but not another with the same sugar content.

There is NO OB or any Dr that can FORCE you to take any tests. Just flat out refuse. They can't make you have a c-section. He is just trying to bully you. Tell him you know your rights and he is trying to force you into something you cannot do. Tell him that you r going to talk with his supervisor( I have no clue how to spell). They can't force you into anything. Don't let them talk down to you..Good Luck

But he'd have to PROVE that you have gestational diabetes first AND that your baby was too large to be delivered vaginally. There are alternatives to the glucose tolerance test. You might want to explain to him how you will react if you consume that much sugar and the GTT is not accurate in RNY patients anyway so it's kind of pointless to do it just for torture purposes!
Ask him about monitoring your blood sugar at home for a specified amount of time. You can also do a 2 hour blood draw where you go in fasting, get blood drawn, go eat a normal breakfast, then come back 2 hours after the 1st draw and get another draw. My OB says that THAT particular test only picks up gestational diabetes 80% of the time so he will not do that option for me. I think he's going to make me monitor my sugars at home when the time comes because he wants as accurate a result as possible for me.
Your Dr. is just bullying you with his scare tactics. You can refuse ANY test and the GTT is one that I would adamently refuse. There are alternatives to it and he's just being a jerk wanting you to torture yourself for something that is not going to be accurate in an RNY patient anyway. You can also refuse a c-section if there is no medical need. You are your best advocate so stand up for yourself and for what you know you want or don't want. What can he do? Kick you out of his practice? If he does, you were probably better off. Good luck!

Well, call me crazy but then he is just assuming that you have it if you don't take his desired version of the test. Maybe drop the word, "malpractice" in there- see if that gets him to change his mind. It is malpractice to force you to undergo a procedure without testing- if for medical reasons you cannot take his version of a test, he needs to do something else. That's the bottom line. You can prove that you had weight loss surgery and cannot do that test. Lawsuit is a good word too.

I agree with the other poster that asked if you could ask your surgeon to advocate for you. Your dr is threatening you into taking a medical test that can be replaced by other tests.
Several of us have done the blood sugar monitoring as well as other tests that can be used to see if you have GD. You could always call your dr's office before your next appt, or go in for your next appt and give him a list of other options that you are open to. If you want a list of the other options, such as the blood sugar monitoring, etc, you can compile that on here, or someone might be able to provide you with it. Your dr sounds like a bully and I wouldn't stand for it.
Good luck!

If anything you could always take the blood sugar tester thingy home for a week or a month and take random blood sugar tests and document the results for your OB. What I did was go in to the lab fasting for 12 hrs and they took blood then I went and had breakfast where I was to eat 1/2 cup of cheerios in milk, banana, 2 pieces of toast w/ butter, and 1/2 cup of milk then 1 hr after last bite I got my blood drawn then again at 2 hrs after. My OB then had me take the tester home and test my blood sugar b4 I ate and then again at 1 hr after I ate once a wk for a month to ensure my sugars were ok. Its a little bit more work but satisfied my OB. Good luck w/ your stubborn OB!

I'd tell your OB where to stick his sugar drink! What I had to do, I am also 28 weeks and had mine done last week was go for fasting blood draw. Go eat a normal breakfast and go back exactly 2 hours after my first bite of food to have another blood draw - they set a timer and everything. I got the results back wednesday and everything is perfect. Tell your Dr that there are other options and that the dumping is dangerous for you and the baby (slight exageration but his is a flat out lie!! )
Hang in there!
