OT - Breakthrough bleeding with NuvaRing
First off, I'm not pregnant. I know this is a pregnancy forum, but I don't know of any boards just for the ladies and I figured I'd get some good responses from those of you on this board.
I had the DS last March. I started the NuvaRing 2 months later in May. My gyno has me on period suppression so that I only have 3-4 periods a year. That is, I wear the ring for 3 weeks, take it out, put a new one immediately in for 3 more weeks, etc for up to 4 months. I did this religiously and only had a little bit of breakthrough the first week.
Fast forward to the first week of February 2010. I forgot to switch my NuvaRing and ended up wearing it a week longer than I should have. As a result, I got my period. Not a big deal since I was due for one anyway but my concern is that I have been bleeding nonstop for 3 weeks now. At first it started out as just some rusty spotting. A week later it turned into full-fledged bright red flow, complete with cramps and mood swings. And it's been that way ever since. I've killed 2 big boxes of tampons the past 21 days.
My biggest concern is anemia. My iron levels are good, but my ferritin was trending low last labs. I saw my hematologist last week and he did not seem concerned about the bleeding. It's seriously cutting into my sex life, not to mention being irritated from using hygiene products.
Anyone know why this is happening? Any suggestions or ideas?
ETA: I put in a new ring immediately when I realized how far behind I was. I've had it in ever since but I'm still bleeding.

I cannot tell you "why" it is happening, but I can tell you that I have had the same thing!
I was told to leave it in for 4 weeks then put a new one in...it worked OK the first 3 months then I started to have the breakthrough bleeding...and at weird times...not just when I should be getting a period.
I am looking into other options for that reason and that I do not like how it feels. A lot of the time I can feel it (To me it feels like a tampon that needs to be changed) and I hate that feeling!
