HOW DO YOU PLAN ON LOOSING WEIGHT AFTER BABY
I think it's hormones or something that does something to the quantity we can eat when we're pregnant. It just HAS to be.....and hormones is an easy thing to blame EVERYTHING on!! LOL
But seriously, for some, they can eat a lot MORE during pregnancy after RNY. For some, they can't eat diddly. I just think that's really weird. I don't think my body has decided yet what it wants to do....lol Maybe after you have the baby, you'll be able to eat more? I know you will still need the added 300 calories everyday. If you can't get it in with food, maybe a protein shake? I like to make a shake that's my own version of a protein shake and OH so much tastier! I can power pack it with as much protein as I want. It's good nutrients for baby and Mommy. It's a good calcium replenisher as well as potassium. Here's the recipe:
Protein Shake
1 medium banana
8 ice cubes
8-12 oz. of skim or 1% milk (I use 1% for the 'added' calories and fat cuz I need it, and you can use more or less milk, depending on how much you can drink at once. I go for about 10oz. and sip it over about 20-30 minutes)
1 packet of banana shake mix (you can find it in the fruits and veggies section at Wal-Mart, but check the sugar content on it if you dump easily. I don't dump on the shake mix though and I dump fairly easily.) OR use about 2 TBS Splenda or sweeten with sweetener of your choice
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (or whatever kind of yogurt you would like in a drink with banana) OR use 1 packet of No sugar added vanilla Carnation instant breakfast
1/3 cup of non-fat dry milk powder (I like Carnation brand the best)
Throw it all in the blender and blend to desired smoothness.
Made with the Carnation instant breakfast, this shake, per 8oz. will give you roughly 30g of protein (21g made with the yogurt instead) (depending on the products you use. I use everything Wal-Mart brand except the dry milk powder & CIB). That is pretty darn good considering it tastes so flippin good!
You can make a chocolate version of this by substituting the banana with 3 TBS of Ovaltine (or 1 packet of chocolate no sugar added Carnation instant breakfast) and substituting the packet of banana shake mix with whatever sweetner you feel you would need. It will have the same grams of protein as the banana, 30g with the CIB, and 21g with just the yogurt and Ovaltine.
I NEVER could do the protein shakes. Made me sick as a dog, so I had to improvise. This is my inventions I came up with. You can substitute lactose intolerant milks (don't know what they're called, Lactaid or something) for the regular milk or you can use evaporate milk instead of real milk. I think evaporated milk has twice the amount of protein that regular milk does (the Carnation brand claims to).
You don't have a whole lot of time to take care of yourself with a new baby. This shake even drank twice a day takes hardly any preparation. I have a Hamilton Beech single serve blender so I don't have to get out a big ole contraption and you don't have to CLEAN a big ole contraption. I can just wa**** out right then and it's ready for next time. Even more convenient would be a Magic Bullet.
I also got a recipe for Breastfeeding Cookies on here. I've never tried them myself but I did copy the recipe and will try them after I have this baby. I can't remember now who I got this recipe from, but I'm trying it. They also said freezing them was good and to add more chocolate chips. This is supposed to increase your milk supply. I hope it works when I try them!
Breastfeeding Cookies 1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 TBSP water
4 TBSP flaxseed meal
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup almond meal
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
3 cups oatmeal, thick cut or old fashioned (no instant)
1 cup or more chocolate chips
4 TBSP brewers yeast (be generous)
Preheat over to 375 degrees, mix flaxseed and water, let sit 5 minutes.
Cream sugars and butter. Add eggs 1 at a time and mix well. Add flaxseed mixture and vanilla. Beat until blended. In a separate bowl add all dry ingredients except oats and chips. Slowly blend into batter. Stir in Oatmeal, stir in chips. Scoop or drop onto cookie sheet or stone. Bake 8 to 12 minutes.
Anyway, that's my sorry little contribution to nutrition while breastfeeding! LOL Hope something in this long narrative helped!

No. This is my first post-op baby, but I'm going to try to breast feed after I have this one. I breastfed two of my other 4 children, but they were pre-op. But I know it was hard to try to take good care of myself even then. I can't imagine now after having gastric bypass. Before it seemed like I just couldn't eat enough or drink enough when I was trying to take care of a brand new breastfeeding newborn. I can imagine it will be harder on me now after GBS.
I just gave you my protein shake recipe because when you're busy and may have forgotten to eat a meal or two, this shake is very easy to prepare (takes me all of 2 minutes), is packed with more protein than you'd get at an average meal. You don't have to sit down and eat it. You can sip on it while breastfeeding, so in other words, multi-task! lol, my favorite thing. Cuz really the key to losing weight after baby is to make sure you are eating right and not just snacking on junk or skipping meals. And having had the bypass, you REALLY need to keep eating, especially if you're going to breastfeed cuz the baby needs and takes what it needs from your body and if you're suffering because you're not eating well enough, then you can't take care of your baby to your best ability or anything else that you need to take care of. I wish someone had given me this advice after I had my last one. I didn't take very good care of myself in the weeks right after I had Noah in that I didn't eat like I should, I tried to drink like I should but it wasn't enough. And after a while, your body starts feeling the effects. Then I got mastitis horribly bad and was sick forever. (Had a raging 105 degree temperature for 4 days straight) I believe it was harder for me to recover because I don't think I was in very good shape health wise and nutrition wise. At that time I weighed about 450 when I delivered him. I can't remember how much I lost initially, but at any rate, my body, just to FUNCTION, required a God awful amount of calories. Then I have to add 300 calories for my breastfeeding infant. Well, I probably needed about 3,500 calories total for the day. I didn't eat NEAR that. At that time, I was lucky to get in 1,800-2,000 calories. That was just enough to sustain my milk making and some of my vital functions, but the rest of me suffered.
So, I'm not going to make the same mistakes this time. Granted I'm 250 pounds lighter than I was then, I'm going to make sure that when my baby is eating, I'M eating too. Or drinking. If you at least drink 8-10oz. of SOMETHING every time your baby breastfeeds, you're going to keep yourself hydrated and that is important for not only yourself, but for your milk production. But if women in 3rd world countries can breastfeed successfully with their lack of food and water, then us women here in America SURELY can....lol
I'm glad you are copying the recipes. I hope they help you. It's a fast, easy way to get your protein in without having to take a lot of time to cook or sit down and eat a meal, especially if you're having a busy day. And then the breastfeeding cookies will be a new thing for me. They're supposed to increase milk production (because of the brewer's yeast I believe). I'll take any extra boost I can get. And they'll probably be a welcome little snack in my day (if they taste good). If they don't, I'll just think of them as a vitamin...LOL
Good luck to you! I hope we can both be successful with breastfeeding and getting our extra baby weight off at the same time. Usually with breastfeeding, it is easier to get that weight off. But for the first month or two, I'm not even going to worry about the weight loss. I think if I eat right and I'm breastfeeding, I think the weight will come off without me even doing anything. But, I may not even gain any weight the way I'm going. As of the 3rd when I was at my OB's office, I had gained another 2 pounds for a grand total of minus 7 pounds. I'm hoping to put on MORE weight.....that's about the first time I've ever said those words about WANTING to lose weight...lol I hope that we are both successful after the birth of our babies! We can do it.

A good way to do it is to take your current weight and multiply it by 12. That gives you a good idea of what your caloric intake should be while you are pregnant and breastfeeding one baby. With that being said, I'm about 200 so I should be taking in 2,400 calories. Doesn't happen! I just get as close to it as humanly possible. The good news about breastfeeding is that it helps you get your pregnancy weight off faster because of the extra calories you are burning making milk.
well i dont think i will be taking in 3000 + cal i am at 257 now...but sure to loose just having her...you have been such a help girlie...! thanks ...
i will do my best to get those shakes in going shopping this weekend so when i get home it is all ready for me. I am so freaking out about this now too. I got down to 260 and found out I was pregnant. Since I was still overweight, the OB only wanted me to gain 15 lbs during my pregnancy. Well, I'm just about 24 weeks and as of this morning I've gained 21 lbs already!!! With my first pregnancy, I gained over 50 lbs. Actually I think it was close to 60. I sure don't want to do that again. I lost it quickly but that was because I got a bad infection, once I was better the weight came back on plus some! Right now, I can eat way too big of portions so as soon as I can after the baby is born, I'm getting a fill so my band will be tighter and I'll be going back to my low carb eating. I have it all planned out in my head, I hope it's not hard to get back on track. I was in such a zone before, losing about 5 lbs a week. I just have to get back on, it's not a matter of me wanting to, I HAVE to.
I WAS NOT FINISHED LOOSING EITHER AND THIS WAS REALLY HARD FOR ME....HIGHEST WAS 375 AT TIME OF PREGNANCY I WAS 238 NOW I AM 256 18 LB GAIN.... WITH MY LAST TWO KIDS I LOST THE BABY WEIGHT WITHIN 6 WEEKS..BUT I NEVER KEPT IT OFF...THIS IS MY FIRST CHILD AFTER RYN....AND I AM DETERMINED TO GET " BACK ON TRACK" I AM JUST ONE OF THOSE PPL WHO HAVE TO HAVE " A PLAN" AND I MEAN EXTENSIVE...WHAT I WILL EAT...WHEN I WILL EAT...ETC....AND IF IT IS NOT THAT WAY I THINK IN OH I MESSED UP I WILL START OVER TOMORROW ...I NEED TO STOP THAT ...THAT IS WHY A DIET NEVER WORKED BEFORE...I DID NOT STICK TO ANYTHING....I KNOW I DONT EAT AS MUCH AS I DID BEFORE...SO MY "TOOL" IS STILL THERE I JUST NEED TO TAKE CARE OF IT AND IT WILL DO IT'S JOB...I KNOW HOW HARD THAT CAN BE ....I AM AN EMOTIONAL EATER....I EAT CAUSE I WANT TO...AND FOOD IS GOOD...LOL...ESP AT NIGHT...I PLAN ON NOT EATING AFTER 7PM NOR EATING CARBS THAT LATE....I HAVE TO LOG ALL THIS DOWN SO IT IS PART OF MY PLAN...LOL ANYWAY SOMETIMES I FEEL NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT "FEELS" LIKE TO HAVE THIS MIND SET ( THE ONE WHERE I AM IN EATING MODE) JUST THIS MORNING I ATE DONUTS (SP) WITH THE KIDS ( THEY DONT GET THEM OFTEN ) I KNEW I WAS GOING AND PACKED FRESH PINEAPPLE WITH COTTAGE CHEESE FOR MY BREAKFAST BUT U THINK THAT STOPPED MY....NOOOO....I HAVE LITTLE SELF CONTROL RIGHT NOW....AND I HATE IT...ALSO I THINK SOME OF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE FACT I AM OFF OF MY ZOLOFT FOR DEPRESSION...FOR SOME REASON IT HELPED ME CONTROL EATING HABITS TOO...AND I AM NOT WALKING LIKE I WAS BEFORE THE PREGNANCY....SOO I HAVE TO GET BACK ON TRACK.... I SAID ALL THAT TO SAY THANKS I KNOW HOW U FEEL...IT IS GOOD TO HEAR SOMEONE ELSE IDENTIFIES WITH SOME ISSUES I HAVE....I DO NOT HAVE ANY GIRLFRIENDS WHO DO....YOU GUYS ARE THE CLOSEST THING TO FRIENDS I HAVE ...I DO HAVE FAMILY BUT ...SOMETIMES I FEEL THEY JUST WONT GET IT....
