Wanting to get pregnant

Hello,

I am 12 months out of my surgery and my husband and I want to have a baby.  Before surgery I had PCOS.  I have never been pregnant before, nor did I use any type of birth control 5 years prior to surgery.

I have lost 130 lbs and I still have more to lose but I just turned 41 in December and hubby and I are convinced it is time to try.  I no longer have PCOS.  My endocrinologist believes that I could get pregnant fast.

How many of you got pregnant a year after surgery? Was it quick to conceive? This pregnancy experience is totally new to me and I am a little lost on how and what to look for if I get pregnant.  I have bought a couple of books today to familiarize myself more with it.  This is something I yearn for the longest time but never really actually thought about seriously since we were not considering getting pregnant.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Have a great day!

I had PCOS before surgery and I was about 16 months post-op when I got preggers the first time. I got preggers the first month we tried. After waiting 2 months after the miscarriage I went a few months and then found out my thyroid was off big time. I had to wait while getting that fixed. First month we could try after getting the thyroid under control I am pregnant again. Things are looking much better this time around. I was 2 years out when I got pregnant this time but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

I got pregnant 1 week shy of my 12 month surgiversary. I had lost 148lbs. I have been pretty much infertile for 6 years. I had taken chlomid, stood on my head, back, neck, and every other hoop had been jumped through for this time trying to get pregnant. Me and my hubby had been very good using condoms EVERY TIME we had sex post op. Then 1 week before my anniversary, we closed on our house and 'CELEBRATED!' Next thing I know, I was preggers! I took 5 pregnancy test (1 walmart, and 4 digital ones) and still didnt believe it. Next thing I know, I've was at my doctor's office (who is a fertility specialist I had been seeing for 3+ years, who actually encouraged me to get the surgery) confirming my pregnancy, looking at a baby and hearing a heart beat. If it is God's, Buddha, Allah, Tree Fairy, or Peter Pan's will--it will happen. For us, it happened the first time without a condom, wow.

--and I had PCOS too!!! and the worst periods known to man and woman. Even had to have a D & C b/c it was so bad one time. Something about losing all that weight, made it happen for us.

--oh, and the books all suck when it comes to wls patients. And so do most of the doctors, we are lab rats. lol. Im taking "Edge OB" a chewable prenatal vitamin prescribed by my fert spec, however, my surgeon tells me "great, now take 2" so i have to do that. And still with the b12 and calcium are more important now than ever!!!

--i'm 18.5 weeks, and i initially gained 8lbs, then I lost it, and have only netted 1lb since finding out...i plan on writing a book b/c this is crazy. and i stopped going to the gym and i EAT every hour!!

I became very fertile following my weight loss.  My ovulation was all over the place before.  DH and I actually tried the first time when I was 9 months out thinking it wouldn't happen that fast.  I got pg and found out by 6 weeks that it was ectopic.  I waited two cycles and got pregnant again at 11 months post op.  So from my experience I get pg easily now.

Have you tried to track your cycles to see if you can find what your fertile days are?  I actually bought an ovulation detector off of craigslist but didn't use it because each time we were only half heartedly trying thinking it would be a process.  There are a lot of things out there to help you track your cycle that don't involve purchasing one though.  I recommend reading the book taking charge of your fertility and visiting the site fertility friend if you aren't already familiar with those.

Best of luck to you on your journey of TTC!!

I think with you being 41 and already 12 months out of surgery, I wouldn't wait any longer to try if you have your surgeon's blessing and you're reasonably healthy. Definitely check with your surgeon, have some lab work done to make sure you aren't deficient in anything. After you have the OK there, I'd say go for it! And have fun doing it!!  Good luck! I hope it all turns out well for you and your hubby!
