Constipation Pain Question

Alright so between RNY and Pregnancy my bowels are SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. I take colace everyday and eat prunes. Well I missed a couple days because I was out. Last night when I got home from work I had horrible pains in my lower back and lower stomach even after going to the bathroom. ANyone experience anything similar? They are gone this morning although my lower back is very achy (Not that this is anything unusual for me)

I am going to mention this to the OB when I see her on Tuesday too. Just seeing if I can prep myself for another "normal" lol

Thanks ladies!

I've been having the same problem.   The pain got so bad once that I had to go to the ER.
I talked to the DR about it and of course this is "normal"  and I was told to drink more water and prune juice.  I have also tried stool softeners and milk of mag which is on my approved med list but they havent been helping.....If I don't pay attention I can go a whole week without going to the bathroom.    I had to break down and buy some fleet enemas.   It's like my whole body has just shut down and won't go....

Hey there I had the same issues too.  But I used to get a lot of pain oin my tummy on the left hand side.  Doctor told to take benefiber (the caplets) times a day and it kept me regular.  Colace and stool sofetners barely worked on me.  So I ate lots of prunes and took 3 caplets of benefiber 4 times a day.

Make sure you drink lots of clear fluids too. Over 64 oz.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks Cira - I am well over 100oz of water a day.

I get that pain on the left side too - I've found out from previous tests that most of my intestines are on the left side of my body for some reason.

I'll get the benefiber and give that a whirl!

I am glad you are drinking lots of fluid.  When you take the benefiber make sure you take it continuously so that it keeps you regular.  Do not skip it at all because when I did skip I noticed it took a while to getting back to regular.

Take care and soon you will not have to deal with the constipation so much.   ;)

Will do!

Thank Goodness! I LOVE being pregnant but there are some symptoms I can live without! lol 12 weeks +/- and counting!

Yep. I definitely have been have similar issues. And the pain freaks me out because it's in my belly where the baby is of course. Don't you love how "normal" this is? I love that I am pregnant and wouldn't change it for anything, but this is one thing I would love not to be a symptom.

First what helps me most (while I was pregnant and now) is upping my magneisum.  (I assume that is similar to Milk of Magnesa someone else mentioned).  Magnesium is on the safe list... for me I have to use Mag-Citrate and I already take a dosage equal to half the amount of calcium I take.  (Calcium is a constipator)  BUT when I am super-stuffed up I add 200-400mg and it helps soften things.  (If I add more it will *really* expel things if you know what I mean!)

BUT - I don't know the anatomy of a RNY super-well and I know different surgeons do their RNY's differently with some being proximal and some distal and some inbetween, etc etc... but with my configuration if I up my fat intake I loosen my bowels.... and when I mean upping the fat intake.... well things like:

A large bag of movie popcorn drenched in butter  or deep fried fish from Long John Silvers or really greasy Chinese Food....   (And these things are much more fun than an enema!)

I hope you find some relief!
