I have a quick question, I had my gastric bypass done back in 2003 and I am 6 months pregnant now everything is great and I am having a BOY!!! but my question is has anyone breastfed after and given the baby enough nutrients through the milk or have to supplement with formula also or just formula feed

A LOT of RNY-er's successfully breastfeed. Some of them take things to help their milk supply along, but others breastfeed fine. I'd be curious to see if studies have actually been done on the quality of our breastmilk after having had RNY, but that's another story. But, yes, breastfeeding happens quite successfully after RNY. I'm hoping to do it myself. This will be my 5th baby, but only my first post-op baby.

Congrats on your pregnancy and your baby boy!

Rebecca, congrats on your boy! I am also having a boy, and have had serious concerns about breastfeeding post operatively (but I'm only 14 months out). I have discussed it with my surgeon, OB, and PCP. They all agree that it can be done safely and effectively and that the baby will get everything he needs (as long as my milk supply is ok). But that I may suffer nutritional deficiets from it. I have been torn as to what to do and have decided to just bottle feed. I breast fed my first two boys (preop) and it was never a good experience. I probably wouldn't be breastfeeding again this time even if I hadn't had surgery.

I have had the same concerns! I really want to breastfeed, something I wasnt able to do with my older boys. However, I frequently run low on protein and go anemic at times on my bloodwork, even when I am trying hard as hell to get all my protein and vitamins in. So, I too wonder about the quality of our milk. I am going to try, and as long as the baby is gaining weight, I figure it should be ok. I believe they recommend iron drops for breastfed infants anyways. I wonder if their is a liquid vitamin as well just to be sure? I will keep an eye on this thread, and Im so glad you asked this question! :)

Most of us who wanted to BF did.  Sometimes it is a physical issue and they can't.  It is usually (not always) mind over matter.

I supplemented 2oz of formula a day due to anemia.  I doubt it was necessary because the baby banks 6 mos worth of iron by the time they are born.

I had my two year appointment with the nutritionist last month. I asked about breastfeeding. She said there isn't a reason why I can and that I will have to up my calories by 500.

I am 3 years out and have been exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months and my baby is doing great he is over 20lbs and in the 90 percentile for his age so he is definitely getting all he needs. Best of luck, breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done!
