Hello All,

Does anyone know if its okay to take protein shakes while you are pregnant? I was reading the one I usually take and it said not to take it if you are pregnant? Are there certain ones that are okay or should I get my proteing from meat. I am having a hard time with meat at the moment and I have gotten so use to my shakes I kind of miss them? Thanks for all your help guys!!!

By the way if you are using a good shake....let me know!!\

Great question. I'm almost 2 years post-op and TTC and have never been told or read that protein shakes should be avoided. In fact, I still have 1 to 3 almost everyday.

Good luck with that!

Hi Kelly,
I was told I could have them.

I also freaked out because I was taking a multi vitamin and it said don't take while pregnant.  I called the company and they said they just want you to check with your doctor first but the vitamin was ok.  I think it's a lets cover our ass thing....

I think it has something to do with putting your body into ketosis- which is great for weightlosss, but not for pregnant women.  I know my Dr. was not wild about whey protein drinks- which many of the powders are.

I've been drinking a shake designed for pregnant women by Belly Bar.  They only have 9 grams of protein, but have a TON of other vitamins.  I have at least one every day.  Some days I have a lot of trouble getting anywhere near enough calories, and I know that with the shake I am at least getting the right nutrients in.

When I was pregnant my ob said protein shakes were fine since I was not gaining any weight.  She encouraged me to drink them or Ensure, Carnation Instant Breakfast anything that would add calories to my diet.

I drink the protein shakes too - both vanilla shakes and some of the Isopure juice in grape and alpine punch flavours.. I can taste the protein in the juices but they're a small serving so I try to gulp them quickly and brush my teeth right after.. I hear ya on not wanting to eat meat all the time and just feeling grossed out by the thought of food.. Am 20 wks right now and have gained 5 lbs total, so I thought it might be good to get more protein in... As the PP mentionned, as long as you are eating real food and only supplementing with the shakes you should be just fine! Good luck!
