doc has me questioning stuff

My son was born by c-section, so this time I have the option to pick if I want to try VBAC or just go for an elective csection. I am planning to have my tubes tied after this one so I figured if I have the elctive csection I could have my tubes tied at the same time and it would only be one surgery. Doc said this is possible but I would have to go to a different hospital. The hospital where I had my son is a catholic hospital and dosent allow tubal ligation surgery. No biggie. Just gotta go to stony brook hospital. My doc then goes into how 30% of women regret having tubes tied (I get it he's gotta tell me to make sure I think it through) and then proceeds to give me alternative options to tubal ligation such as iud and some other contraption that goes in your tubes. All office procedures. I tell him I'm not interested and then he goes into how stony brook is a teaching hospital and do you really want a student doing your spinal and a group of students hanging around youer surgery. I tell him a group of people watching my surgery dosent bother me but a student doing my spinal does a little. He says he would never let his wife have a spinal by a student and says just something to think about. Stony brook is like one of the biggest hospitals on long island. The do csections everyday. If you have a problem pregnancy most people ELECT to go there because they have such a fantastic NICU. My neice was born with her intestines her belly and had to be delivered at stonybrook and my sister loved the hospital. Sigh. But now the doc has me rethinking my whole plan because he made me nervous. I almost feel like he was trying to talk me out of it. I'm wondering if they don't make any money off doing the two procedures at the same time. I think I am still going to go with my original plan but now I'm going to be nervous the whole surgery.

Hi there,
sounds like you have some things to think about.  I am sure that the doctor would make more money off of 2 visits but I really can't tell if that's why he is telling you what he did.

If I were you I would call Stonybrook and ask them info on who gives spinals and other procedures.  I am pretty sure a student will be guided by a teacher and will not be in there all on his own.

As for a tubal afterwards, I am opting not to have it done because most of the women I know that have had one has had problems with it.  I also read the other day that many women that have tubals have to have hysterectomys later on in life.  This happened to my SIL.

Luckily my DH has said that he is going to get himself fixed so I don't have to go thru that.

good luck with your decision.  I would research and do what you are most comfortable with.

Hi there!
Wow ... that's a lot to think about and I am sure it makes you nervous!
First of all, remember that this is your body and your birth ... you have a right to go through it the way you want. A VBAC should not be eliminated as an option because it is more covenient for someone else. It's all about you! Yes, of course the doctor will abe able to bill more if there are seperate proceedures, but that might not be his motive. I would encourage you to be honest with him in questioning his motives ... ask him directly what his reasons and intentions are regarding your health and the health of your baby - again, totally your right.

As far as your choice of birth control, I assume you have done your research and drawn a conclusion you feel best suits your family .. no one should have the right to make that decision for you! Stick to your guns, and do what you feel is best for your family. Again, totally your right and not the choice of your doctor.

And, also, please know that most hospitals are teaching hospitals, and you can always tell the staff that you do not want students to perform your spinal ... there are attendings and residents in anesthesia who can do that for you. You should NEVER be forced to submit to care by a student if you aren't willing (I wouldn't be willing with that kind of proceedure!).

I guess I just wanted to throw in my two cents to support you and encourage you to stay in control of your body and your baby. Do what you feel is best for you, and that might mean standing up a little to this guy, but you know what's best for you! Keep us updated!

I am just wondering why your doc is pushing so hard for you not to go to the other hospital? Does he make more $$$ if you go to the first hospital. This is totally your decision. I wouldn't let him push you into anything. I would ask him if no one ever let him do things as a student, how would he have learned. I am sure the students have an experienced doctor there supervising.

I'm guessing your doc makes not as much at SB than at the catholic hospital to deliver you. My doctors are like that too- they can deliver at three hospitals in the area but they have special accomidations (tenure? I forget what it's called when they are "the" doctors at the hospital) at the one I delivered at. I hear that SB has an awesome L&D ward, why don't you visit both and go from there? Ask lots of questions to the nurses. Most hospitals in NYC area have tours. My BFF had that problem in Staten Island, St Vincents was a catholic hospital and she couldn't get her tubal there until they changed to a non catholic hospital--- two weeks after she delivered her last baby (PS- her doc snuck hers in).

You can ask for a non student to administer your spinal. You can meet the anethesiologist up front.

I had two repeat C's for baby #2 & 3. Not only was it convenient for my out of state parents to watch the kids, but I was sure to get the doc I wanted to deliver (there are 4 in my group), the anethesiologist the doctor wanted, and with the last baby, the tubal I wanted. I wanted the tubal done then because I was going to be on the table anyway and I did not want another hospital visit. It was right for me and my family and no one was talking me out of it- including the practice that asked me if I was sure every office visit from the minute I went for my first appt. I think they asked me so much because they want to make sure that YOU are sure.

Take the tour- you might be pleasantly surprised =o)

PS- no problems from my tubal, my BFFs tubal or from anyone I've known to have a tubal

My boys are 3 reasons why WLS was right for me! I love my post op miracles =o)

Hey Girlie...I call bullsh((*&^t on trying to scare you about going to a teaching hospital.  My question to him would have been...weren't you a student/resident at some point, because if you were not, I want a different doctor..lol

I had my preemie at the University of Washington and of course because it is a state funded hospital you have a ton of residents poking and prodding at you, but you ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS either have the attending physician or their head physician, I can[t think of the same at this moment.  Anyhow, I got excellent care there and I was there for what seemed like forever and a day.  I credit a nurse and a resident for saving my son's life because they are the ones who caught the hole in his lung and his chest and abdomen filling up with CO2.

So make up you own mind, but dont let the words teaching hospital scare you away :)
