Andrea, Vitamin help!!!

Or any one else with vitamin knowledge!

I got my labs back today.  My vitamin D was off the charts high, it was 150 and they ran it twice.  I take 1 prenatal daily and 2 calcium citrate with vitamin D, but not a super high amount, these were recommended by my surgeon.  What does this mean?  Is this bad?

Also my Iron was normal, ferritin was 15 I think, but my iron binders were way high.

Any advice welcome!

Thanks Karen

Look to see if it is 0,25(OH)D or 1,25(OH)D or even a combo.  Many times 0 and 1 are added together to create a number as well.

If it's 150 and you aren't taking a D supplement, I'm guessing it's 1,25 which is the active form of D swimming around in your bloodstream -- Calcitriol (1,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol) is the active form of vitamin D found in the body.

Ferritin is 15?  Yikes.  That's not good.  That's craptacular -- my realm.  Don't go down my road.  Your iron is normal because your body is pulling from your ferritin.  What happens is your body has a need for iron.  It's not there so the body says "Hi Liver.  I need some iron.  Blood doesn't have any to spare.  Give it up."  Liver says ok, but grudgingly in the form of Ferritin.  So your ferritin is suffering (and let's be frank -- it's normal, but in the "barely" range -- 11-200 is normal) because it's being trampled to make the others "normal."

thanks.  Yes the vit D is 1,25.  Is there any danger in it being high? it says the highest it should be is 75.

I'm gonna call my surgeon tomorrow, well maybe Thursday because were supposed to get pounded with snow tomo, but should I take an iron sup?  I have some high potency iron tablets i never took because last time my blood was drawn my iron was higher.

Nope, not dangerous at all.  It doesn't tell you what your real score is, though.  Do you have a 0,25 or a plain 25-hydroxy anywhere on there?  THAT's what we want to know.  If not, they ran the wrong test.  Which happens *often*.  And it scares people.  Like tonight.

*I* would take iron with a ferritin of 15.  I *am* taking iron with a ferritin of 15.  Right now, actually.  Best irons for ferritin building are carbonyl, polysaccharide, and heme.

What are your other iron scores?  Are they low?  Fine?

Would it be wrong of me to send a copy of the ASMBS Allied Health Nutritional Guidelines for the Surgical Weight Loss Patient, that you posted back in November, to my PCP?  My Mom, who had surgery a year after me, also sees the same PCP.  My PCP is in the building with a WL surgeon, so she really could go ask him, but they don't always give good answers, as you know.   I love my PCP, best one I have ever had.  She is extremely knowledgeable and never gives me crap when I ask for blood work or anything.  Is that offensive??

*I* wouldn't think so -- with a post-it saying -- "Hey, I know you're busy, and I ran across this and didn't know if you had seen it.  If so, great!  If not, thought maybe you'd like it."

But if they get pissy easily, it could backfire.  Who knows -- I always seem to **** off my doctors, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask!

If your D is low, you need to supplement.  Now.  Or you won't have any bones left.  For your next draw, ask them to tack on a PTH as well.  (You'll get a funny look - get used to it.)

I'd add on a dry D3 supplement.  It needs to happen, and it needs to be big -- not 1,000 IU, 5,000 IU, or 10,000 IU.  If they write you a script, ditch it.. but see how often they want you to take it and go get vitalady's D3-50 (same strength, but dry D3 rather than oil-based D2) and take it on the same schedule.

But it really needs to be taken care of ASAP.  Push them for therapy NOW, despite the pregnancy.  If you are deficient, it won't hurt baby for you to get a high-dose treatment.
