Bad Nausea & Vomiting

I've had morning sickness with all of my pregnancies, so this one was no different.  I think every pregnancy can be different...surgery or not, but your tummy definitely may be more sensitive now.

I took Phenergan with all of my other pregnancies but didn't with this one.  It's almost an antihistamine so at first it made me really tired, but once my body got used to it I was fine...I took it the entire pregnancy I believe.

Also, the biggest help was always keeping a sugar free peppermint life saver in my mouth...it was essential to me.  I don't know why..but it worked like a charm.

I'm very skiddish about taking phenergan because it's a class C drug AND phenergan causes me to have uncontrollable muscle spasms and it's AWFUL.

I'm doing the peppermint thing pretty much constantly. If I'm not eating or drinking something, there's a green and white peppermint in my mouth! LOL They seem to work fairly good. And I can get a pretty big bag of them at Wal-Mart for a buck!

My doctor said that phenergan is the most prescribed anti-nausea med in pregnancy, and that he trusts it, but I agree that no medication should be used unless absolutely necessary...and if it makes you feel horrible that is one more reason not to.  I felt terrible the first week I took it, then felt fine after that...it was the only thing that helped me.

I agree the peppermint is great!  Glad you found that on your own...really does make a difference. Hopefully you will start to feel better on your own soon.  Morning sickness is the worst..

altoids and oyster crackers (THANKS JO!) got  me through the first 12 weeks! There was something about the strong mint of the altoids that calmed my stomach. And I would eat 1-2 oyster crackers every few minutes, that seemed to help.

Hope that you feel better!

Oh and I've seen plenty of ladies post that have been on phenergan and zofran most if not their entire pregnancies and their babies are perfect.

PS - I can't imagine morning sickness and 4 kids - you go girl!

Altoids.....now that is an idea. Although I do have a green and white peppermint in my mouth pretty much all the time if I'm not eating or drinking something. I even fell asleep with one in my mouth the other night!! Yipes!

And my morning sickness is pretty much all day sickness and it's not making it easy with 4 kiddos that's for sure. I always have to point to the room of my bedroom door when they are in there and I start to get sick. They realize what it means now and they high tail it out of there fast! I don't like for them or anyone to see me getting sick.....lol

Professional puker......I like that and think that I've now adopted that title! LOL That's weird that diet coke takes that feeling away from you. I actually don't drink any diet drinks. Can't stand em. ALthough I DID try the pink lemonade suggestion that was made, today when we went to Chuck E. Cheese. Kept me puke free for the 4 hours we were there. LOL

Lexa made me laugh at the "professional puker" remark.  I can sooooooo relate.  When I was pregnant with DS I got so I could puke in a mcdonald's bag while driving 75mph down a freeway with a car full of screaming kids...LOL  I don't have any real answers for you, but if the zofran is helping, then take it and do not worry about it.  You have to be able to function...you have 4 other kiddos counting on you.  I look at it this way...if there was a huge risk, the doc would not prescribe it for you...the benefits definitely outweigh the risks for this med...so take it and make the guilts leave your mind!!!  I do not know if your doc told you this, but after the 1st trimester it is perfectly safe to take Benadryl...which actually has the same properties as zofran or phenergan for nausea...the only difference is you can buy it over the counter.  So, you might consider that when you run out of Zofran.

Take Care!

I actually do take Benadryl ( in the form of Tylenol PM) pretty frequently but more for my allergies when I start sneezing a million times a day. I haven't really noticed that it helps with my nausea.

Now I'm having a problem getting my Zofran because my Dr's office won't fill out my prior authorization form so that my insurance company will pay for it (I had been getting loaner Zofran's until such a time that they got the prior authorization done). They won't call the company to get it done so I did it and had the forms they needed faxed to the office and then they call me Friday at 5:00 to tell me that the Dr. said that they just aren't going to fill this paperwork out, that he'll prescribe the medicine, but won't fill out the forms that I need done to get the dang thing paid for! I'm so aggravated cuz I was on the phone for 3 HOURS on Friday trying to get those forms faxed to his office! Grrr! So, I guess he'll either have to fill out the form or he'll have to admit me so I can get the Zofran at the hospital cuz I can't keep this up indefinitely every 2 hours! Geesh, what a mess. I'm tired of messes.....and stress! lol

My experiences have been completely opposite than yours. I had severe hyperemisis w/my 1st and 3rd (to the point of hospitalization) and it took a lot of experiementing to find the right anti-nausea med for me. FTR, Zofran is the ONLY one I can take that doesn't either make the nausea and vomitting worse or make the room spin horribly (or both!).  I had 3 pre-op babies and when I found out I was expecting #4 at just 9mos out, I was so terribly freaked out. My surgeon was literally the 1st person I called, crying. His response was "Congrats! You're about to have the best pg of your life!" In truth, he was 110% right! I never had 1 bit of nausea...no morning sickness at all. Only way I knew I was pg was the growing belly and once she started moving.
My 2nd post-op pg was my 1st surrogate pg, and it was really good too. I did have a lot of sinus drainage that made me a bit nauseous, but I never threw up at all. I'm on my 2nd surrogacy (3rd post-op pg) and this time I got hit w/morning sickness and the sinus drainage. If it would have been just one or the other, I would have been fine. W/getting hit w/both of them, I've been taking Zofran again, though I take the disintegrating tablets which I LOVE!! The morning sickness is gone, but the sinus drainage is still hanging on. I'm to the point where I might need to take 1-2 tablets every couple of days, but it's nice to have it on hand, just in case. In all honesty though, I really think that the sinus drainage had more to do w/the additional meds and hormones I was having to take and it just takes longer for it to work through my system.

If my pre-op pg's would have been this good, I would have had way more than the 3 of them! Sorry it's not going so smoothly for you. Like you, I had tried EVERY remedy out there and nothing worked. 1 thing that supposed to work wonders tho is taking a half a unisom tablet and a B-6 tablet at the same time. I've had several Dr's recommend that as well. There are also the "sea bands" and bonine that can potentially help.

Bambi~ I see we are due at the same time. Technically I'm due July 14, however, due to my labors, we're inducing on July 10. We find out on the 26th if they are having a boy or girl!
