Hey Karen,

I know this wasn't directed at me but I just wanted to tell you you can refuse anything you honestly dont want. They can say that require you to be hooked up to monitors and IVs and whatever else. My hospital requires it, but I already spoke to my OB and told her I refuse it...I will do a hep-lock at most. She said fine, I will probably have to sign a waiver that I am going against the policy (if you want to know the name of the form just ask and I will tell) and she is signing my birth plan so that no nurses can object. Its also a good reason to have a birth plan if you are adamant about things like that. So please dont be intimidated by policies, remember your paying them, speak to your OB before hand about your wishes and wants because the hospital cant force you to do anything, they can just have "policies."

I had one all written out.  I took it to the hospital and the nurse went over it with me, but in the end, I think it was a waste of time.  You just can't predict what will happen, and my plan basically went out the window.  Besides, most of the things on the plan are questions they just ask you anyway, and you can tell them.  As for the circumcision, they will ask you if you want it done, and you'll tell them.  They don't just do it automatically.  I was lead to believe the birth plan was a big deal, and it turned out not to be.  If those are the only things you really care about, I wouldn't put the time and effort into writing a whole plan, but the choice is yours.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
DaNell

Thanks DaNell! Maybe I'll just write it on a note and give it to hubby "just in case". I am going to tell the OBs office all this ahead of time too - maybe at my 30 weekish appt.

As far as birth plans-can't really help ya on that....all 3 were c-sections.  I know my dr. went over everything with me the last couple of visits before my c-section.

As far as the c-section - even with my girls--my 1st 2 were girls (and we knew it!), they still has us sign papers at the hospital at the time of admittance saying we wanted the circumcision should it be a boy.  Now for our last baby (who we knew was a boy), we also signed the paper as I was admitted saying we wanted him to be circumcisized.  Usually the OB does the circumcision, but sometimes the pediatrition will also do it.

Hi Liz!

I have a birth plan and its kinda in depth...its a page long. But then again I am also striving for a natural unmedicated childbirth. So I do have a birthplan which was written with the help and assistance of my doula. Additionally, my OB knows I have one and I am bringing it to her at my appt on Monday so she can go over it and sign it (if it is signed no nurses or other drs can object to my wishes unless medical reasons are interfering). Here is mine, feel free to ask me any questions.

Birth Preferences

All I want is for my baby and I to leave the hospital healthy and happy.

I understand that some things may keep me from having this birth go exactly as planned and if the doctor feels adjustments are needed out of medical necessity, I would like to be consulted before any action is taken.

Thank you for taking the time to read over my preferences

Labor:

·         Please do not offer pain medication.  If I want it, I will ask.

·         I would like to wait for water to break spontaneously or until at least 7cm dilated.

·         Heparin lock catheter instead of IV, if a line is necessary.

·         I would like to only monitor for 20 minutes or less out of each hour during labor

o   During delivery, I would like to leave the monitor on for constant monitoring.

·         I plan to walk around, shower and go to the bathroom.

·         Please keep vaginal checks to a minimum.

·         If available I would like a birthing ball and a squatting bar.

·         I would like to try different positions for pushing and delivery.

Delivery:

·         Episiotomy, I would prefer to tear.

·         I will push when I feel the urge, please no counting or yelling.

·         I want to wait until the cord is done pulsating to clamp and cut it.

o   The baby’s father, Demetrius, would like to cut the cord.

·         For baby to be placed on my chest to bond and nurse immediately after delivery – Delaying all newborn procedures until after the first hour (including eye ointment).

After Birth:

·         No Pitocin after the baby’s birth unless bleeding is excessive.

·         We would like the baby to stay in the room at all times and all tests done in my room; if she needs to leave, the father or I will go with her.

·         Breast milk is the only thing I would like to give my baby so please NO sugar water, water, or bottles.  I will breastfeed on demand.

o   In the event of an emergency Ceserean section:

    • Epidural is preferred over general anesthesia if time permits.
    • The father (Demetrius) is to be present with her at all times.
    • I would like to nurse as soon as possible.

Thank you for helping us!

Thanks so much for sharing that Simone! I hope that all goes exactly according to your plan! I never really gave it any thought, but the more I hear and read it seems like the hospital and doctors are leaving a lot of this up to us as the mother which I LOVE.

Anytime! It all depends on the hospital. I know my hospital is a teaching hospital so I am actually going against a lot of their "policies" and thats why having a doula and a birth plan is so necessary for me. But my OB is ALL about the mother so she is willing to work with me. The things in bold I am not willing to compromise on and will get at all cost necessary (unless mine or the babys health is at risk), the other things I am willing to compromise.

I am also going to be bringing a basket of chocolate for the nurses...you know to butter them up a bit so they notice how demanding I am being lol.

I just wanted add to be sure you talk to your OB ahead time. My OBs flat out say they do not follow birth plans because emergencies arise then you have to sign on the dotted line. Of course they do discuss things like epidurals and bf and circumcision with you. Also the doctor I see in the practice is very open to what you would like happen.

Good Luck,
Emily
