Dizzy feeling...anyone else?

So last night I was making shrimp scampi and garlic mashed potatoes, couldnt have taken me more than an hour from start to finish. Well as I was dishing out my dinner I started getting very lightheaded and then dizzy, I literally started seeing the room spin. I had to grab my plate and water bottle and rush over to the table to sit down because I feared what would happen next. Had a few sips of water and in 2-5 minutes I was fine again. Weird thing is this has happened before (at the supermarket, in lab class at school, out shopping) but it has never worried me too much before because they are few and far between and I am usually in a public place if anything else were to happen. Well last night I was home and I live alone.

My question: does this happen to anyone else? Do I need to go see my OB asap? I had my bloodwork drawn up a few weeks ago and get the results next week (if anything was lowering they call), so I don't think its any defeciencies unless iron causes this. And if you have had this happen, just out of curiosity, what would happen if I wasnt able to sit down right away and drink water...would I pass out? This is very weird to me and now starting to worry me. I'll call my OB tomorrow about it.

Simone

Hi Simone,

I've had attacks of vertigo with my first and now my third pregnancies.  Although the drs don't seem to agree that it's pregnancy related, the only times I've had problems with it is during pregnancy.  The dizziness can vary from mildly dizzy to can't walk a straight line, throwing up dizzy.  It's trademark is the "room spinning" sensation.  You should probably mention it to your dr.  I'm sure there are other things that can bring on the same sensation, this is just my experience.

If that is the problem, it's very important that you get all of your fluids in.  Dehydration and vertigo are a vicious circular cycle.  I've had to go into the hospital to get fluids a couple of times because I couldn't catch up on my own.

Hope that's not the case for you and it's just a dip in blood pressure or something.  Take care of yourself!...Natalie
p.s.  Your dinner sounds yummy!  Even this early in the morning.

Thank you Natalie.

I think I will have to look into your dehydration theory. It doesnt take much to keep me hydrated (or for me to gt dehydrated at that)...like 40-50 oz a day and my urine is clear and I go potty every 2 hrs or so. I dont think Ive been getting less than that but I will be more cautious and I am actually trying to bump it up. Thankfully Ive never been hospitalized for dehydration yet...even though I have been severily so.

Thanks for the dinner comment. It came out amazing which is a lot for me to say cause I cant cook and cant follow directions. But Ive been having swelling in my legs lately and so Im trying to reduce my sodium from frozen meals.

sounds like a dip in your blood pressure... you could call the ob and let them know what happened to see if they want you to do anything when it happens

Thanks for the answer!

Im thinking more dehydration because of the swelling in my feet lately.

But can you tell me more signs of a dip in blood pressure? It sounds very probable too.

there really are none... its just being dizzy... then you pass out... very common in pregnancy due to the increase of blood volume that we have... something like 50% excess then we had normally

Its happened to me recently.  I know that as we go into the third trimester, nausea and fatigue come back(and its already back for me)...but the fainting feeling I have had when I am in stores.  I almost fainted in Walmart not too long ago.  I have heard that it is a pretty common ailment amongst preggos..but still, you may want to talk to your doc to be sure.

I don't get faint cooking...I just want to vomit nowadays...and its worse than in the first tri. But ya know...come to think of it...I did get what I call "a sit down or fall down spell" the other day whilst cooking.  I looked at the clock and I hadn't eaten in about 3 to 4 hours...anything.  I am thinking it could also be a drop in blood sugar.  BECAUSE...as soon as I ate something...combo of protein and carbs...I felt normal again.

I don't know...mention it to your provider's office.  It is scary when it happens....last time I had a spell like that...I was alone too.

You know Anne, it might be a standing issue too. Thinking about it, every occurance has happened only if Ive been standing/walking for more than 45 minutes. And I might need to keep track of how often I eat, I have been a little more deligient because I'm just so hungry...3 full meals but snack between each meal...so I end up eating 5 or 6 times a day. And it is very scary, hopefully none of us expierence it again.

This happens to me ALL the time!  My dr said its normal, but I need to keep an eye on it.  He told me in my case its because I may not be getting enough calories.  (at the beginning of my pregnancy I was getting about 800 a day) now that I have increased that, I am not feeling the light headedness as much.

And yes, if you werent able to sit down, chances are you would faint.  Thats what happened to me, twice at work.  Luckily I had someone there to catch me before my head pounded onto a desk.

Good luck, Talk to you Dr.  and check your labs.

Thanks Marla. Good to know what will probably happen, so I will sit even if its on the floor.

In the beginning I might blame those on calories but not now. I eat a slice of pizza for lunch almost everyday, have a glass of cranberry juice, and usually have some kind of potatoe (usually mashed) with dinner. Those alone are about 6-700 calories and that doesnt even include breakfast, snacks, and the rest of dinner lol. Gotta love pregnancy appetite.
