Making unplanned trip to OB office today

Yesterday, while driving to work, I began to get really lightheaded and dizzy. Pulled over and had my husband drive us home. By the time we got home, I was white as a sheet and the lights were going out. My blood sugar was fine. My BP on the other hand (I'm a nurse) was only 78/40. I laid down for quite a while, drank a bunch of water, and waited. Almost called the OB, but frankly it's an hour drive to the hospital and I had no one to watch my kids. Didn't want to deal with that headache if the feelings would pass on their own.

So I'm still feeling lousy today, though my BP is better. I called and I"m going in to be seen in a few hours. I know that I'm anemic and my ice eating has gotten out of control lately. Wondering if my blood counts have dropped even lower and that's what's making me feel so lousy? Also wondering if any of you post op people know if eating ice can cause problems with our pouches? I've been having some epigastric pain that if I wasn't pg would concern me about my surgery (ulcer, etc). Thoughts??

Will keep you posted.

Hi Melissa,

I don't have any experience in what you are saying, but I just wanted to say good luck and I really hope you feel better. That sounds like it was really scary. Please go to the doc right away next time. That BP sounds really bad.

Hope the OB can give you some answers!

Thanks everyone. To say it's been an eventful day is putting it mildly. I went to the OB, cried and got all emotional (isn't that just like a pg woman?). Explained my frustration with my exhaustion (I've never been this tired at this stage of my pregnancies before. She  explained it's probably a combo of the anemia (which may be getting worse) and the BP running low because of pregnancy. She suggested I take a sudafed in the AM to help increase my baseline BP which doesn't run very high to begin with so that when I have those BP drops as most pregnant women do because all the blood flow is rushing to our babies, it won't affect me quite so badly. She also drew some basic labs and will see what my hemoglobin/hematocrit levels are doing. They may decide to up my amount of iron.

After leaving the dr office, I pulled out onto the interstate to hear a loud noise and blow out a tire. I couldn't get a hold of anyone to come help me. I've never changed a tire before and didn't want to start today when I am 29 weeks pg and already dizzy. Luckily someone helped and I was finally able to get home. But man, what a day!!

Wow! What a day! Glad everything worked out for you. Let us know how your bloodwork looks. Is craving ice a sign of anemia? I eat/crave it all the time, and I never considered this! My iron tends to run low also! :) Good luck hun!

Super proud mommy to Dylan, Owen and Sophia Brianne!

Yes, eating ice is a sign of anemia. It's often referred to as PICA, but some people crave things like dirt and rocks. I'm lucky to just crave ice! The dr called back today, my hemoglobin is down to 9. It was 11.6 at the start of my pregnancy, 10.6 in November when I had my 1 year post op labs down. So she's having me increase my iron to twice daily to see if it helps.
