Liquid Iron...Anyone had to take it...problems???

Hi everyone,

I was switched to liquid iron 2 tsp. 3x's a day to build up my blood for the delivery. I am anemic slightly before pregnancy. Anyway, the iron tends to run me to bathroom no matter what time I take it in the morning whatever I eat thereafter comes out. It closely reminds me of dumping which I've only done about 2x's since surgery. I didn't do this with the pills but apparently they think this will absorb better for me. If it doesn't work they will give me IV's 2-3 times a week. I hate needles so I'm trying to endure. Anyone take liquid vitamins any tricks to not getting sick? Thanks.

I was on liquid iron for a while and hated it.  It upset my stomach like no other.  I've switched to Proferrin.  It's a capsule, but super easy to swallow (I have the hardest time swallowing pills) and you can take it with food or on an empty stomach.. You also don't have to avoid the dairy products right after taking it because food doesn't affect it's absorption.  You should try it if you can find it!

Are you lactose intolerant? A lot of medication (and I mean A LOT) has lactose in it. If you are LI and the medicine contains lactose, that could make you run to the bathroom too. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for it to have lactose in it because of the calcium thing, but it's worth checking.

I just had to start taking iron again too. It has the exact opposite effect on me. I guess I won't be going to the bathroom at all for the next 6 months.

I am lactose intolerant, but they say you can't take this with dairy so I don't think it has any in it. I'll check though. The pills had the affect on me that you have. that was easier to fix than this.

Maybe try heme iron instead?  Ionic iron wasn't working for me at all (600mgs ionic elemental a day) and I switched to heme 3x a day and my ferritin jumed 5 pts in 32 days.

It's an option..  and easy on the pouch.  AND I don't have trouble going to the bathroom.

Thanks, do you get this iron over the counter or do you need a prescription? I am willing to give it a try if the docs okay it.

It's OTC.

You can get a poly/heme combo at CVS and Walgreens.

The heme can be bought directly from the company or from vitalady.  Pricing runs the same between the same price.
